The UK’s Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) intercepted and stored the webcam images of millions of internet users.
The Guardian reports that in one six-month period, the GCHQ – with aid from the US National Security Agency (NSA) – collected webcam imagery from more than 1.8 million Yahoo user accounts.
The publication reports that Yahoo reacted furiously when questioned about the revelation, denying any prior knowledge of the program.
While the six-month period took place in 2008, last month it was revealed that the GCHQ and the NSA were harvesting data from Angry Birds to track suspected terrorists.
The British spy agency said it would not comment on intelligence matters, but insisted that all of its activities were ‘authorised, necessary and proportionate’.
