PlayStation was the only console brand to increase its video games sales last year.
According to ERA based on GfK Chart-Track data, the number of PS4, PS3, PS2, Vita, PSP games sold last year was 11.4m, an increase of 1.8 per cent over 2012. These games combined generated £372m, a rise of 15.2 per cent. The larger jump in revenue is due to launch of PS4 and its more expensive software.
But Xbox was resilient and remained comfortably the biggest console brand last year, with 14.4m games sold. That’s a slight drop of 6.5 per cent year-on-year. Xbox games generated £458m, an even smaller decline of 2.1 per cent.
But it was a bad year for Nintendo. The number of Wii, DS, Wii U and 3DS games sold last year fell to 6m, a 35.5 per cent drop over 2012’s 9.3m. In total these games made £142m, a fall of 27.6 per cent year-on-year.
