Microsoft’s £4.6bn acquisition of Nokia’s handset business has been help up by Indian and Chinese governments.
Nokia is tied up in legal cases in India, while the Chinese government’s Ministry of Commerce is reported to be pressuring Microsoft and Nokia to lower their patent fees.
The acquisition of Nokia’s loss-making business was first announced in September.
Microsoft’s general counsel and executive vice president for legal and corporate affairs, Brad Smith, posted a statement on the Official Microsoft Blog revealing that the firm expects to close the deal in April 2014.
“The completion of this acquisition will mark the first step to bring Microsoft and the Nokia Devices and Services business together,” wrote Smith.
“Our acquisition will accelerate our mobile-first, cloud-first imperatives. We’re looking forward to accelerating innovation and market adoption for Windows Phones and introducing the next billion customers to Microsoft services via Nokia mobile phones.”
