DVD Burner in a PS2?

Ran into this thread on another forum a few minutes ago while looking for interesting PS2 homebrew, and, on the second post, the user mentioned hearing about some people sticking DVD burners into their PS2s. Further down, post six, the person says they've actually done the mod. Anyone ever hear of this being done or know anything about it? I know that in Japan they made the PSX (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_%28DVR%29) but, I doubt that's what the user is talking about, particuarly due to the "i changed it to a DVD burner" part in their post.

i was just wondering if my ps2 laser is dead or if i wanted to preserve it just use a external dvd drive would it play games that way?
