Apple may not be nearly as enamored with virtual reality as Facebook (http://www.engadget.com/2014/09/20/oculus-rift-crescent-bay-vr-headset-hands-on/), Google (http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/10/google-cardboard/) orSamsung (http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/30/milk-vr/), but that doesn't mean it's uninterested -- it's clearer than ever that Cupertino has been intrigued for years (http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/17/apple-applies-for-head-tracking-patent-johnny-chung-lee-says-y/). The USPTO has granted Apple a patent (http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsearch-bool.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&co1=AND&d=PTXT&s1=8957835&OS=8957835&RS=8957835)(originally filed way back in 2008) for a headset design that uses your iPhone as a virtual reality display. The basic concept bears more than a small resemblance to Samsung's Gear VR (http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/17/samsung-gear-vr-review/). You slot your phone into a cradle that sits in front of your eyes, and an external controller (in this case, a remote) helps you navigate when motion tracking isn't enough.
