From here on out (http://blogs.msdn.com/b/kinectforwindows/archive/2015/04/02/microsoft-to-consolidate-the-kinect-for-windows-experience-around-a-single-sensor.aspx), Redmond will no longer sell the now redundant desktop-specific version and instead point app developers toward the "functionally identical"Xbox One (http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/20/microsoft-xbox-one-review/) unit and its necessary adapter cable (http://www.engadget.com/2014/10/22/microsoft-kinect-2.0-sdk/) instead. The Xbox One sensor (http://www.engadget.com/2013/10/03/xbox-one-kinect-design/) was apparently pretty popular amongst desktop developers (http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/03/windows-10-universal-apps/) and Microsoft couldn't keep up with demand in some markets, so rather than keep producing two incrediblysimilar units, it's likely focusing its efforts on producing more of one.
