Hot on the heels of Microsoft’s official Xbox One price drop, one retailer has cut the price of PS4 to well below £299.
GameStop is currently advertising a bundle including a 500GB PS4 console and The Elder Scrolls Online for just £279.97. That’s more or less the same as the price it was offering on its PS4 Witcher 3 (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/playstation-promotes-279-99-ps4-witcher-3-deal/0149462) bundle last month.
Microsoft this afternoon cut the RRP of its existing 500GB Xbox One to just £299 (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/microsoft-confirms-permanent-uk-xbox-one-price-cut-new-1tb-console/0150680), permanently maintaining thepromotional price (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/xbox-one-uk-price-is-now-299-99/0147908) that has been in place for the machine since April.
It also announced a new £349 1TB version (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/microsoft-confirms-permanent-uk-xbox-one-price-cut-new-1tb-console/0150680) of the machine, which is exclusive to GAME (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/1tb-xbox-one-is-a-timed-game-exclusive/0150714) until Saturday June 20th.
Both consoles have been subject to what has been a fairly brutal price war (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/price-war-erupts-in-ps4-vs-xbox-one-battle/0148185) for quite some time now. GameStop’s international president and EVP Mike Mauler told MCV last week that the current UK next-gen price war is currently the most aggressive in the world (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/uk-ps4-vs-xbox-one-price-war-is-bigger-than-anywhere-else-in-the-world-says-gamestop/0150467).
Sony’s UK MD Fergal Gara told MCV last month (http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/playstation-s-gara-talks-price-wars-bloodborne-no-man-s-sky-and-black-friday/0149460) that “any price war in any sector in any market can be dangerous”, adding: “If there is a race to zero, who wins from that?”
