When Canonical's phone-centric adaptation of Ubuntu first made it onto devices last year (http://news.slashdot.org/story/14/09/28/0230224/ubuntu-touch-for-phones-hits-rtm-first-phones-coming-this-year), it received a mostly "wait-and-see (http://tech.slashdot.org/story/15/02/08/0034236/the-first-ubuntu-phone-is-here-with-underwhelming-hardware)" reception (http://news.slashdot.org/story/15/07/21/191219/a-month-with-a-ubuntu-phone). For anyone outside Europe, they didn't have much choice, since it was unavailable elsewhere. Now, BQ has opened sales of the Ubuntu phones worldwide (https://insights.ubuntu.com/2015/08/10/bq-goes-global-with-ubuntu/). That said, the devices still have technological restrictions (http://www.engadget.com/2015/08/10/bq-ubuntu-phone-global-sales/). "Both of these devices support GSM bands 850, 900, 1,800 and 1,900, as well as UMTS 900 and 2,100 — so you're not going to get any joy if you're on a CDMA network like Verizon."
