Hoping to ride the popularity coattails of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, Sega's upcoming action RPG Phantasy Star Portable is gearing up for its summer release with a first trailer.

The PSP release, being produced by Sega's Sonic Team division, is based on the latest games in the series, Phantasy Star Universe and its expansion, Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus, and will offer offline multi-player functionality, letting four players team up on quests, just like 2nd G.

As pointed out last week by Kotaku, the desire to entice Monster Hunter loving fans goes beyond game functionality, and includes an updated logo that bears more than a passing resemblance to Monster Hunter's logo.

The game comes out July 31st in Japan, and a UMD demo will be given out shortly before launch.

O.O Beautiful.

I am now defenitly rooting for an American release. It'll be one of sega's smartest decions to bring this to the US and Europe as soon as possable after the japanese release day.

Good god i'm drooling........

edit: I wonder why there are suddenly many comparisons between this and 2nd G. To my knowlage, Phantasy Star portable has been in the works longer than 2nd G, and 4 player ad-hoc was one of the first bits of solid info we had on the game. And, this is just my opinion, but the artwork looks to me to be a throwback to classic Phantasy Star games, not an intentional ripoff of Capcom's franchise. Again, thats just an opinion.
