View Full Version : The Homebrew Channel Released

wraggster
May 24th, 2008, 21:28
Finally Homebrew comes to the Wii the way it was meant to be and thats without the need for the Zelda Game, heres the release details:

The Homebrew Channel is a channel for launching Wii homebrew applications without the need to run the Twilight Hack first. It will list apps stored and organised on an SD card in a nice little GUI, which you can very easily customise with descriptions and shiny little .png icons all by yourself if you want. You can also launch homebrew apps via TCP (with a correctly configured PC) or USB Gecko (http://www.gp2xstore.com/USB_Gecko_Development_Tool_Nintendo_Wii_p/128.htm&Click=21). Both of those built in options make it extremely convenient for testing out new code, as well as a general purpose homebrew launcher.

Included in this fantastic release is

GameCube Linux v0.4
ScummVM rev32231

Does the Wii64 work if you have only a sd card or do you need the gecko, and can you use the twilight hack for the wii to work? Thanks.

I guess this is the price we pay for being beta testers?

I've even tried programs like Tetris and it freezes at the loading screen. What's going on here? This isn't a tease like the 10 min loader is it?

Meh its working fine for me.

try formating your Sd cards to FAT/FAT16

Put your apps back on

that might fix it, it usually fixes my snex9x problems.

Working fine for me too.
As icecoolwas said, try reformatting your cards, make sure all your stuff is in the proper places, etc.

acg12xu
May 25th, 2008, 00:06
If someone can load their images that they use for SNES, NES, etc. That be great. I'm having trouble finding images that are a good ratio..

boourns28, I haven't tried yet, but maybe copy one of the xml's from the included apps but make changes that are appropriate for your other programs? I'll try it later and post results

boourns28
May 25th, 2008, 00:14
yeah i can't find any images with good ratios..i'm just using some i found and squished em. I tried that no luck but i'm not sure if you have to change the app version aswell? it's set to "1" for the wii64. anyhoo thanks again...let me know of your results

I cant seem to get the boot.elf installer for the channel to work. Previously, everything i had ran fine, but when i try to use this channel installer it starts up like normal with the twilight hack, but then gets some sort of error and just freezes.Ive tried reformatting the sd card to fat16, and redownloading the file incase the file corrupted, but no luck. Any ideas?

EDIT:Nevermind, found out the link i had used previously wasnt the correct one,now it works fine:P

Is anything else required like a modchip?

Nope, just need a computer than can read sd cards, an sd card itself, and copy of twilight princess for the wii,and the proper downloads and your good to go.

Edit:Found a good image for the gameboy emu, just resize and it looks fairly decent.

I seem to have another problem. My emulators dont want to load any of my roms, even though i have all of the roms properly placed and the folders named correctly, for example nesroms for the nes emu and roms for the snes emu. Also, my gameboy emulator freezes after loading, anyone else having the problems or have any ideas on fixing them?

Edit:Figured I should be more precise on the problems im experiencing.

GBC Emu:Finishes loading to 100% in homebrew channel, screen goes black and just sits there,i have to hold the power button to turn it off.

Nes Emu:When i go to load my roms, it proceeds to tell me it cannot find them, shows the list screen for roms but with no roms listed, afterwords i go back to the menu for the emu.

Snes Emu:When i go to load my roms,it proceeds to tell me it cannot find them,if i hit A button i receive some text telling me a error and it freezes,if i hit b it takes me back to the menu for the emu.

Sega Genesis Emu:This emu actually finds its roms and loads and plays them, but when i click the system reboot option it proceeds to show some error text and then freeze.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix any of these?I dont have a GC memory card inserted either. All of these emulators previously worked fine for me when using them normally with the twilight hack btw.

README says this:

RISKS, CAUTIONS, and SYSTEM UPDATES:

Any persistent modification to your system (meaning, anything that does not go away when you turn off your Wii) carries some inherent risk. We have worked hard to avoid this whereever possible, but we are unable to test all possible configurations.

We do, however, believe that our channel is safer to install than any other homebrew channel that has been released, and once you have installed it we hope you will never need to install another!

Makes you wonder how Jay_PaRaDoX can be so sure of his channels, no?

Anyway, I've been waiting for this since day one. As I'm sure alot of other people have. Though I think I might hold off on installing it for a few. Read up on it to make sure I can do a clean install and get everything working without much fuss.

3 questions

1) Does channel usage show up on the message board like everything else?

2) Is the channel easy to uninstall?

3) If I use this will having WiiConnect24 on affect it, or should I turn it off? (Sometimes I play online games)

1.Yes,shows up like every other channel.

2.Yep,its uninstalled just like any of the other channels.

3.It might, but seeing as its been tested by team twizzers, should be more than safe enough.

Also, anyone else having the problems with their emus that i stated in my previous post?

How do you open the file? how do you open .Tar extensions?

.tar is an archive. I'm using WinRAR, but I'm sure you can Google for plenty of other apps to untar files.

As far as the lower-right, if you read the FAQ, you would deduce that one is for the wireless and the other is for a USBGecko.

I'll go ahead and not answer all these other questions so as not to encourage such questions.

i.e. - Linux question. WiiBrew and Google.

make a foldr called "apps" in the root of the SD card and put your .elf/dol files inside folders in the "apps" foldr.

so it'll be like:
apps/snes or apps/nes etc. etc.

hmm, i got every homebrew to work except RIN, i just get a black screen when i try to load it..

i got some cool pictures on google for my emulators and homebrew apps/games and resized them to 128x48 (it says it has to be 128x48 in the readme) and saved them as icon.png it HAS to be "PNG" format, the .xml file i edited one of the app xml that came with the HBC, with notepad:D, i added release dates names, info and everything, it took me 3 hours, i did that until 4.30am this night..

i added the WAD installer, but i haven't tried it yet with the HBC, anyone tried it with the HBC yet?

hehe BURNED!:D mwahaha:p

i just noticed a funny thing in the HBC, the hand is pointing f*ck you!:D haha

the cool thing about the HBC is that it updates itself, maybe they can make some kind of wiiware or something, allowing you to download new homebrew apps and games and save them on your SD card, that's the coolest thing i can come up with;)

as they already have the WiFi working (in the auto update) i'm sure they can make a GUI with a homebrew "wiiware" server connection, but it will probably take a long time though..
i'm just saying it would be a cool idea:)..

I wonder if there's anyway to have an RSS feed like thing for news updates on compatibility with new firmware updates.

Also, the Nintendo Channel has a function for seeing what channels and games you play and for how long. I don't think Nintendo would exactly approve of using the homebrew channel...

I'm loving the new channel. After some searching, I was able to find compatable NES and SNES frontloading/saving non-wiimote versions, so I'm happy now. For those getting freezes when you exit an emu (GenPlus and SNES9X), just hit the z button on your GC controller at the code dump screen to return to the loader.

TP loader isn't finding your ELF. So it's not the ELF that's bad, it's one of the steps you're taking to put the ELF on the SD card. Or your SD card needs to be reformatted.

More questions:

1) Can this void your warantee? (If my Wii breaks (again) will Nintendo still fix it?)
2) Is there a risk of bricking my Wii? You know, the warning with wad installations.
3) If information is stored on your Wii, can't Nintendo potentially use that same information to ban people from Wiiconnect24? I know people can get banned from XBL but I don't quite know how that works.

Other than that it looks great. I just only have one Wii so I try to tred with caution. I have no doubts this channel is a miracle. Keep up the good work.

1) You're modifying the system with 3rd party software. Nintendo has every right to tell you know, but unless the homebrew channel actually caused the problem, they might be gracious and fix it.

2) Modifying files on the system always carries this risk. Extremely unlikely, no brick has been reported from this yet, but there's always a possibility.

3) Yes, they can retrieve the ticket info. They could ban you, but it seems unlikely at this point in time.

This Homebrew Channel is effin' brilliant! The only reason I installed it was so I wouldn't have to use my Freeloader anymore (for Okami and Smash Bros), but the region free program included with the channel laughs at me every time I try to use it! After I load it, I see what I'm guessing is the region free menu (somethign about pressing A), but then this evil black screen covered in white text (just random numbers) assaults me! Any idea what could be causing this? I don't have any Cube memory cards in.

This package includes the homebrew channel and a lot of emulators and applications for use with the channel.

**All applications and emulators have the included icons and description files used by the homebrew channel.**

the emulators and applications included are as follows:

wiipaint freezes after you sync the wiimote. (not sure what the problem is or how to fix it.)
some of the tp reboot options cause crash but the reboot wii options work.
other than that i know of no other problems. please let me know of any you find.

copy paste the contents inside Wii SD into the root of your SD card.

**THIS PACKAGE DOES NOT INCLUDE ROMS OR WADS AND I WILL NOT AND CANNOT PROVIDE THEM**

roms for different emulators go in different folders:

someone make a youtube video on how to install this pls. its too hard and the readme is confusing. and i do not want to brick my wii!

It's not hard for any chance, and the read me state it pretty simple. But still, 'll give you a workthrought for it

1.- Format your SDCard on a FAT32 format. It must be a 2Gb or less usb and no SHDC
2.- Install the Twilight Hack used to run simple homebrews (I won't explain this. Google it)
3.- Place the boot.elf file on the root of your recent formated SDCard and place it on your Wii
4.- Your Zelda: Twilight Princess and run the hack as you were running any other homebrew.
5.- This will load the the boot.elf of the homebrew channel installer, reset your wii and woala, your new homebrew channel will be installed and ready to run more homebrew

I would upload a video showing how it's done, but I don't have any good cam to do so, only my shitty 1mb cel cam which only takes like 15 secs of video

Only use FAT32 if you're using 0.1alpha3b version of the Twilight Princess hack and only use that if 0.1alpha3a doesn't work.

I tried two versions of the Super Nintendo emulator: Snes9x GX front version 5 and version 6.

When I try to load a rom fron the front SD in both versions it gives me a message stating "/roms doesn't exist", and then it crashes.

Anyone having similar problems?

Ive had this channel loaded for two days and it works fantastic, but everytime I try and run GC Linux it freezes during loading. Any suggestion. Also Ive seen some question about NES emulator and Ive tried them all. The best currently is fceu_rev23_test2.rar You can download it from the tehskeen froums. It has rom loading from the front SD with out need of SD gecko also save state to sd and full wiimote and nunchuck compatability. The only problem with it is some times mostly right after wiimote sinc it displayes wierd color bars, but if you press home on the wiimote they disappear.

Is anyone else getting an error running the elf? Here's what I get:

Found boot.elf!
## No elf image at address 90100000

loading binary file...

and it freezes there. Does anyone know how to fix that problem? I've tried installing elfs I downloaded from 3 different sources and they all give me the same problem.

I'm still having the same problem, even though I tried formatting my card as both FAT and FAT32 as someone suggested. Any more ideas?

are you using the correct version of the twilight hack? you need to make sure you use version "a" for Fat and version "b" for Fat32. If that isnt your problem try using the offical panasonic SD formating tool. There is a link to it from the wiibrew twilight hack page. After that your problem may be do to your specific SD card. Not all cards work. It cant be over 2GB. Ive got three cards that work two I formated with the panasonic formating tool to Fat and the third i had to format to FAT with the Panasonic tool first and then format it Fat32 with windows. I hope you get it working

BIG BIG THANKS to the BRILLIANT coders who made this one!!! It was the easiest thing to install and looks and sounds beautiful! What a difference it is to not have to load and reload Gecko carts, Datel discs and retaining the sleek look of the Wii with memory card panels closed, and best of all, I can play Zelda again by erasing the hack and restoring my original save file!

Is there a way to customize the order of the homebrew list in the channel, say if you want Sega first, nintendo 2nd, etc?

My sincerest thanks to you all! I can't wait to see the emulator menus say "Reload HBC" etc! :) Neopop and NeoGeo CD Redux- everyone will soon be looking at you the way grandparents glare at their unmarried kids to make more grandchildren... :)

I don't know if it's been addressed but that would be because it knows you've used the hacked "nolimit" homebrew channel. You can actually get rid of that by obtaining the wad version of the "nolimit" channel and uninstalling it that way so it gets rid of the ticket but it's actually pretty funny.

.tar is an archive.

Ok I get that, I opened the channel file with winrar, I got the file ". I opened it, theres one file, I don't know what to do now. ,what do you do with the hbc apps thing? I'm confused...

I just formatted with the Panasonic tool and it still doesn't work. I've never had any problems getting homebrew to run before this, so I'm confused. Someone said the problem might be the way I was putting it on the card, but I was just dragging it with windows like every other elf file. I don't know what to try next... maybe I'll just wait for the next version or something.

EDIT: Does it matter what version I'm at? I have 3.2U now, and I haven't had any trouble before.

I just tried and found out you can load Hell_Hebou's Homebrew Launcher from the new Homebrew Channel. Just put the boot.elf in apps/launcher and the rest in the root. It loads all the older emulators properly like before and you can still use the "Restart Loader" option to get back to the Homebrew Channel. I wouldn't say this SOLVES the proiblems some of the newer versions have, but it certainly pauses them for now. :)

Edit: Oh, and by the way, I couldn't find an Icon and Meta for the Homebrew Launcher. Could someone please make one or tell me where there is one? Thanks. :)

kingslime80

Here's the icon and meta.xls I made for the homebrew channel 0.4 with the original reposted and the theme I use. Just put your older/not working files in the /homebrew folder like before and your good to go. It's the Hell_Hibou version, hence the owls on the icon. I know it's not very good, but I'm not that artistic on a small scale. :)

Really? You consider that porn? It's for a homebrew app that already exists and despite the controversy some people tried to raise, Nintendo never had any response to such "explicit" material. If you don't like the image, you're free not to use it.

I have a US-NTSC Wii that has a Wiinja modchip installed. I successfully installed the homebrew channel from a disc. I loaded on the suggested programs onto a SD card and with it inserted into my Wii I can bring up the preliminary menu.

However, I can't get the applications to load. Any of them whether it be Tetris, N64 emu, GC Linux, etc. will not load and just seem to hang. When I select the application it brings up the loading bar and just stays at 0%. I thought maybe I might just have a slow Sandisk SD card though my PC reads it just fine and the Wii did bring up the initial menu from it. Even waiting 15 minutes for the progress bar to load any application it just stayed at 0% and I was forced to manually turn off my Wii.

What can I do so I can enjoy the homebrew channel completely?

Mooroar
June 3rd, 2008, 09:48
kronostar. i had that problem at one point, i fixed it by removing my gamecube memory card from slot b. so your best bet is to try that. if that doesnt fix it then i dont have any clue why it would do that

NegFactor
June 3rd, 2008, 15:32
@kronostar -- Mooroar is probably right. There's two symbols in the bottom right corner of the HBC app selection screen. If the one on the left is lit, the apps will tend to just hang until you do a hard reset. If you remove a memory card from slot B (and possibly A, I just removed both of mine to be sure), the next time you load up HBC, you should see the right icon lit of the two in the bottom-right corner. If that's the case, everything is fine and you're good to go.

As a side note, if the right icon is lit, you can just place your memory cards back in their respective slots. I don't know if you use either of them for loading (or if it's even necessary anymore due to the standards for homebrew loading via HBC), but I did verify that you can do this. :)

kingslime80
June 3rd, 2008, 18:15
Funny, I just pull my Memory card a little bit out of slot B and it works fine. If I put it back at any time it freezes again.
And by the way, if you take it out while the app is loading but frozen it will start loading almost immediately, so you don't have to reset the whole system if you forget.

I have the channel installed already but was wondering... If I wanted to hook up a friend's Wii (also unmodded) with the channel, would we have to jump through the hoops first of installing the TP hack or does the HBC download of the ISO disc image crate the ability to run it from there on an unmodded wii?

Basically, (as a lot of people stumbling here to the scene will wonder) the end result for the record...

Can one install the HBC on an unmodded Wii w/o having a copy of Twilight Princess?

kingslime80
June 5th, 2008, 20:35
As far as I know, you can only run the CD on a moded wii, but using the TP hack will work un-moded. If you have a copy you can bring it over, or if you don't you can rent one from blockbuster or wherever, just make sure you use the right one for the rented copy.

Ok. I do not get this. I have installed VC games and wiiware games using the Twilight Hack, and I have read the install guide that came with the file from hbc.hackmii.com/ and find it very confusing. I have been reading online now, off and on, for the past 2 days and can not find a detailed guide.
I have the Twilight hack on my wii, it shows the little white wiibrew emblem in the data managment settings. I formatted the card to FAT16 and then placed the boot.elf file from the the_homebrew_channel-beta_8.tar file I downloaded in the root directory. The install instructions said to create a folder and name it APPS, and place it in the root. Did that. "place the contents of this distribution in the root directory of that card," is a part of the instructions. I beleive this is what is screwing me up. I have placed each individual folder, didn't work, placed the "the_homebrew_channel-beta_8" folder, not the zip its self in the root directory... etc. in every combination that i try, when the twilight hack starts, I get Error (ret =2). I can't figure out what i'm doing wrong.
I even unplugged the GC memory card... nuttin. If any one can help me I would greatly appreciate it.

yeah, I did that, even reformatted my card. I think the twilight hack that I am using to install the channel is the problem. It says
" Mounting SD card... OK!
Opening directory "wad"... Error! (ret =2)"

It keeps trying install wads.
If I add the folder "wad" into the root directory, it goes through the installation process without errors. However, since the WAD folder is empty, it installs nothing.

Hello,

I have a question regarding the Wii Homebrew Channel. I ran a search before asking this to make sure it hadn't been asked before, and it appears as though it hasn't, but that could be due to my faulty search abilities, :)

Anyways, the question is this: will I get banned from online play if I install this program onto my Wii? I realize there aren't many games on the Wii that have quality online play, but with Monster Hunter 3 on the horizon, I'd rather not get banned.

Thanks for any and all help,

So, I have a question...

I recently purchased Super Smash Bros. Brawl for my Wii, only to find out it doesn't play it very well (I have to remove the disk and stick it back in approximately 12-20 times before it finally works...). So, I am assuming I have to send my Wii back to Nintendo. Unfortunately I also wish to add the Homebrew Channel to my Wii, and I wonder if that would impact my repair. Logic tells me, "Yes of course it will, they'll probably void my warranty."

Problem is, if I send my Wii in they'll probably update it, won't they? I haven't updated my console yet to the firmware version that screws the hack. So, what should I do? Is there a way around it...?

I've got a question on this, which I'm pretty sure I already know the answer to, but I'll ask anyway.

Can you copy a channel (such as Homebrew Channel) to an SD card and place it on another Wii by this means? I would assume no, but since I don't have a second Wii, I have no means by which to try it.

No, you can't place the Homebrew Channel onto another Wii in this manner. It needs to be installed with either the Twilight Hack or disc image. The disc image will only work if the Wii is modified with a drive chip.

so i am going to make my first post now in desperate need of some assistance I use the gameboy color emulator RIN simply because it is the best one ....gnuboy lol gtfo how can it say color emu when it's monochrome ..but anyways I digress There is currently a version of Rin Wii that offers wiimote support (love using the wiimote for my emus) and there is a version that has a functional save feature (rin wii beta 3 re release) i ask only one question. Why not both? I have to save if im going to use the program but I like wiimote support If anyone could come out with a release supporting both I would love you forever but anyways lets get back to the topic the homebrew channel It does not boot the version that supports saving and now I am currently dual bypassing to not have to run the twilight hack (homebrew launcher .08) <it's amazing> I am about to test beta 3 in it I am posting just after testing the wiimote version in dissaray at the fact that I couldn't save and to add more angst I am mildly angered by the "homebrew channel's" rejection of the beta 3 elf but I am given a brief reprieve because I found the new version of homebrew launcher but if anyone knows basic coding plz release a version with wiimote controls and saving......ohh and hi im the new guy sorry for lurking ^_^

burn image to disc, select speed or bitsetting if required...Burn and Play, if it doesn't play it's either a crap disc, crap burner, softmod just isn't compat with that game.

Hmm I'm having trouble with the .iso. My wii just returns an error to eject and power back up.

I tried burning off slower speeds and different programs, I never have issues with image files normally. When I mount the image I cannot explore it either, anyone tried it with the iso installer?

It only just occured to me I have 3.4u version. So this .iso won't work.

I have a wiikey mod also, I don't know if that makes any difference

Would I still need to do the twilight hack and stuff DJ?

With my wiikey, could I just sling the files straight onto an sdcard?

I'm off to buy one tomorrow
