Fans are none too pleased about the cancellation of Daredevil by Netflix, which joins Iron Fist and Luke Cage in the graveyard as the streaming service methodically kills off its entire Marvel universe, with The Punisher and Jessica Jones likely to follow as soon as their new seasons air.
Rather than just tweet angrily about it, fans have organized a petition to try and save Daredevil, and so far it’s attracted 47,000+ signatures (https://www.change.org/p/netflix-disney-and-marvel-tv-studios-save-daredevil). It’s even being shared by members of the cast like Wilson Fisk himself, Vincent D'Onofrio.
What exactly is the petition demanding? It has a plan A, and a plan B:
That Marvel Television reach out to Netflix to negotiate a mutually beneficial deal that allows the show, in its current format, to continue. Either on Netflix, or on a different platform.
Barring this approach, that a deal is reached that allows the characters from the Netflix show to appear in other Marvel Television productions, played by the original cast.
The problem? The situation surrounding Daredevil and all these Marvel Netflix shows is complicated. Netflix is killing off these shows:
Because they’re expensive to produce and Netflix does not have a full stake in “owning” these shows the way they do with most of their other originals. This has caused them to even cancel far less expensive but also acclaimed shows like American Vandal as they try to shore up ownership of everything “original” they put out.
Disney is starting up a rival streaming service that will strip all of its content from Netflix and put it on Disney+, so Netflix has very little incentive to host a series of expensive Marvel shows for a company that is no longer a partner, but instead a direct rival.
