Director Taika Waititi has been approached to helm a proper Star Wars film, according to The Hollywood Reporter (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/taika-waititi-courted-star-wars-movie-1269996)’s sources. Waititi, who is responsible for directing the season finale of The Mandalorian, Thor: Ragnarok, the Oscar-nominated Jojo Rabbit (https://www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/joker-pulls-in-11-oscar-nominations-greta-gerwig-awkwafina-snubbed/), and Marvel’s upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder (https://www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/thor-love-thunder-embraces-marvels-all-new-all-different-comics/), is in talks to develop his own movie in the universe, though progress is “unclear.”
The report goes on to say that whether or not Waititi is working with Kevin Feige on Feige’s previously announced Star Wars project (https://www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/disney-bringing-marvels-kevin-feige-over-to-develop-new-star-wars-movie/) is also unclear, so this new film may or may not be something entirely different.
Interestingly, Variety (https://variety.com/gallery/martin-scorsese-oscar-nominations-reactions-florence-pugh/25th-annual-critics-choice-awards-arrivals-santa-monica-usa-12-jan-2020-14/) interviewed Waititi earlier this week following the announcement that Jojo Rabbit was Oscar-nominated and asked if he would ever direct a Star Wars movie, to which he said, “Yes. Obviously I would, but I’m going to just settle for IG-11 being the hero of the entire season of The Mandalorian.”
Judging by Waititi’s apparent fondness for the universe, we can at least surmise that the director would push to work on Star Wars if circumstances permit. If that weren’t enough, he’s even already built a relationship with Disney via Marvel, too.
News that Waititi may get a shot at his own entry in a galaxy far, far away should be exciting news for fans, especially considering the reception the season finale of The Mandalorian garnered. The Escapist’s Jesse Lab dug the episode too (https://www.escapistmagazine.com/v2/the-mandalorian-chapter-8-review-redemption/), saying the Disney+ show’s last chapter delivers on the show he always wanted.
