One of the weirder sagas in the streaming wars was what happened with the mass execution of all Marvel’s Netflix shows over the past few years.
Before Disney Plus was a glimmer in Bob Iger’s eye, Netflix and Marvel joined forces to make a series of shows about The Defenders. That resulted in multiple seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher and a crossover Defenders mini-season. But eventually, one by one, regardless of quality or ratings, all the shows were killed off.
This was during a Netflix purge where they didn’t want to keep making expensive shows that they didn’t fully own. And Marvel didn’t really care to fight for these Netflix shows because they had always treated them like the black sheep of the family (they never once connected to the MCU in any meaningful way) and knew they were going to be building their own TV projects soon enough.
The catch with all this was that Netflix’s deal with Marvel reportedly contained a clause where Netflix would still retain the rights to these shows and characters for two years after the shows finished airing (https://comicbook.com/marvel/2020/04/09/marvel-studios-can-use-daredevil-mcu-sooner-than-you-think/). Meaning Marvel couldn’t starting making their own Defenders character series in any capacity until then.
