It’s been a weird year or so for Disney Plus, the streaming service from the biggest entertainment giant on earth. For a company so big, it has been strange for me to use its streaming service exactly twice in the last year, once for The Mandalorian season 1, and then again for The Mandalorian season 2. (https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2020/12/18/be-sure-to-watch-through-the-mandalorian-finales-credits-for-a-big-reveal/)
But that’s about to change, and I think the narrative is about to be flipped on its head, judging by how The Mandalorian itself has taken over the entire pop culture conversation whenever it airs.
Disney has two things going for it that will allow it to smother discussion of Netflix’s offerings in a sprawling, year-long blanket. While yes, there has been a relative drought of non-kids programming on the service to date, that will not last for much longer. As the pandemic hopefully keeps receding, their slate of promised Marvel and Star Wars shows will be released, and they have announced a ton more shows than we even knew about before (https://screenrant.com/disney-movies-shows-2020-new-announced-explained/). Something like 11 Star Wars series and 10 Marvel series when you add them all up.
Both of these are connected universes within themselves. Every single thing that happens in a Disney Star Wars show is going to be canon in the new era, which is a huge deal for superfans, as we’ve seen by every twist and turn of The Mandalorian being met with wide eyes. The same goes for Marvel where under Disney’s new TV plan, these shows will be more fully integrated into the MCU, much more so than “technically” MCU shows like Agents of SHIELD or Daredevil or The Punisher ever were. Developments in WandaVision, for instance, should lead directly into things in the next Spider-Man or Dr. Strange.
