A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB” access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,” an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

trophies? rip off of achievements by any chance? does this mean that you can also play music in game?

very nice :) I'm edging towards getting a PS3 soon so the more updates the merrier but music and messaging in game wont be all that new to me.

Hmm what will be here first, Home or version 2.40...

How about skipping 2.36 entirely and making it part of 2.40 and giving it to us that much sooner.

2.40 won't be out for another month, that's why (E3 - July 15th).

They already announced it, why would they announce it again at the E3?

Hopefully, it's coming out this month.

That's Sony for you. Look at the PSP. Some firmwares coming a day after the other.

in-game XMB doesn't mean in-game music.

It hasnt been announced. The only thing that is guaranteed is messaging.

Nice if we did get the music function though. So instead of version 2.40 today, it's 2.36 - to improve system stability when playing PS1 games. Not much but oh well. I wonder if Sony will add more visualisations to the audio player and the option to choose whice particular one you want to view.

It hasnt been announced. The only thing that is guaranteed is messaging.

I would imagine it does include music. That is one of the biggest reasons why people want it.

Not to mention, a Dutch gaming mag said MGS4 supported music play off the HDD through the iPod; Konami could have "dropped" it until In-Game-XMB comes out (since it would certainly make it easier).

Who really knows, but music better be part of it, because frankly GTAIV's soundtrack really sucks and MGS4 doesn't really have one...

I like MGS4's soundtrack and I just LOVE some of the songs on Snake's iPod, but I hope that after this update I'll be able to listen to my Guilty Gear music while playing MGS4.
