While those of us 'round these parts have pretty much given up on the idea of a DVD-playing Wii a long time ago, folks in Japan have had some cause for hope based on promises from the company that such a system was, in fact, headed for the country sooner or later. It seems like they're now about to enter the acceptance phase as well, however, as Nintendo has just announced yet another delay to the system with no word about an eventual release date. According to IGN, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata would only go so far as to say that due continuing worldwide supply constraints on the current Wii, "the priority is on the current model." One thing getting a boost in availability, however, is the Nintendo DS 1Seg TV tuner, which Nintendo says will get a retail release next month after previously only being available online.

If you ask me they should have been focusing on the glaring issue of storage space before even started contemplating DVD playback.. Get with it N!

Yeah and what about this dvd playback - what's the fuss? Give the xbmc guys and gals 5 minutes and they'll make it for ya. Everything else can play dvds nowadays - the only reason I'd need it is that I only have noisy consoles to play dvds on - I'd like a quiet console to play dvds on, but its not that important. Concentrate on the games and other gamerelated stuff

The funny thing is the old one could be DVD capable. I guess the new one might be DVD capable and have extra space. Of course, it will cost more too.

i really hope they won't do another wii version (i mean hardware upgrades), just a firmware update that anyone can get so they give us DVD playback and USB Mass Storage compatibility.
