this reminds me very much of a popular small-time pc/mac game awhile back called ev-nova, you could look at the earlier editions of the game, escape velocity, and escape velocity override; alot of ideas there and game mechanics, tell me if i was of any help, the company that made those games is called ambrosia. good luck!
