View Full Version : Where Have All the Coders Gone ?

ITs no surprise to anyone that was here since the Hello World release by Nem and the following 4 months of madness that followed with multiple daily releases by many coders that the PSP Scene has slowed down massively, is the cause of it boredom with the PSP?, have Sony won the war and the coders fed up with trying to take on the firmware updates everytime a firmware is hacked. Have new consoles with open source coding environments won the hearts of our coders or has piracy caused coders to leave the scene.

What do you think ?

I'd think that the holiday season has something to do with it. If they're anything like me, this is the time to kick back and put up your feet. If this continues into Febuary, then it might be a cause for concern, but for now we can just let it be.

On a side note, commercial releases for the PSP haven't been much better in their pace of releasing great games lately.

Or if there like me then this time of the year is the busiest and takes a lot away from there free time.

My theory (or is it just wishful thinking) is that coders are getting down to projects that take more than 10 minutes to produce (pronounced AotM mod). I am in this category myself. Making a fullscale game from scratch takes a bit of time and you guys might not see the final result until Feb. Just because you're not seeing daily results doesn't mean it's not being worked on ;)

i do hope i can d0wngrade my 2.5 or get an EBOOT loader. i don't wanna have to buy a new flash chip! :(

its probably the holiday season and its busier than ever but, after Hello World and Tetris for 2.01 n higher, it just like, stopped dead as a d00rnail. :(

Well hopefully sony is content with just keeping the upgrade requirment at 2.00... so there games cannot be pirated....

Homebrew is actually good for them... ISO emulating is NOT!!!

So now that you cant play new releases like Lord of the Rings and GTA on 1.5 and HAVE to update to 2.0, hence not allowing you to run a UMD Emulator, You actually have to BUY the game!! (or physically steal it, but sony gets money then still... bastards...)

as long as they only require the 2.0 update, we can just downgrade to play Home Brew, and Upgrade to play our comercial perchased games!

or maybe the developers are all fed up of all the bullsh!t that is surrounded by the PSP scene. If its not major websites trashing one another like children, its the developers themselves. Personally I think publicly bashing others rather than just letting your work speak for itself is childish and I guess the developers think so too...

Plus, it seems like so many developers have had their work stolen and/or people being charged to download it so decided whats the point?

In any case, while the homebrew scene had a great run, I think it became a victim of it's own success and frankly has been one of the most childish homebrew scenes I've ever seen.

I do love the emulators that have been released though. By far and away ade the PSP worth owning (since the games are all basically crap anyway).

Like someone else said I also think it is becuase fall/winter is a very busy time of the year for many people. There are people in college at this time, working full time, preparing for upcoming holidays (halloween, thanksgiving, xmas, etc). So I think we might see a little progress here soon and if not then I'm sure it will pick up again during summer when a lot of poeple have way too much free time. :D

I agree with this. Coders are less quick port crazy and more focusing on more difficult task or original games.

I also have been one of them with my Bsp Viewer which is the basis of my future psp 3d engine.

Wow a 3d engine would be great. btw PSmonkey have you heard about the GNU Blender software it has a 3D engine for creating games easily and can be exported in standalone files. Will your engine be done in a similar fashion.? I wish I could port this. Im not a coder, I can model and animate in 3D.

As for the topic, I too thought it was seasonal, as more things would be available during summer months, than winter. Though the thought of coders leaving the scene did go through my mind.

I bought Exit a few days ago and it was for 2.5. I also played, or tried to at least, a demo of Byte hell but the store demo unit couldn't run it because their demo PSP was 2.0 and the game was for 2.5. Sorry to break that news to you. :(

Heh, actualy you can see my 3d engine on my site (hosted by dcemu) at http://nemo.dcemu.co.uk. It's been mention from time to time. :P

No I have not heard of GNU Blender nor plan to suport it. I am actualy suporting Quake 3 Bsp Format (maps) & will suport Quake MD2-4 model format over time (first being MD2 since i can code it easly).

If you guys remember that a good program takes its time then all is well.

I can recall one of the coders (ROTT) going skiing so thats probably where they all are.

I am starting to learn C now so hopefully something will be done

Flash updates have brought many of that scene down.

It is - to them - a war they feel they cannot win. The prospect of always having to fear that the majority of users of the device you are working for are not going to be able to keep using it on the long run is frustrating.

Knowing that you will have to keep it up to date. You have to keep your eyes on the ball. You cannot really sit back and relax for once. Not even after you finished up. Because with system upgrades that keep on coming, you'll never be sure that you've made people very happy.

Knowing that, and that you'll eventually lose interest, lose time, lose aim, will result in giving it all up. You could ask somebody else to pick it up, but by the time you realize you are running forwards but you keep being pushed backwards ... you give up.

I will put money on there being a lot of homebrew emus and apps that the public will NEVER SEE.

Since seeing the ammount of piracy that goes on the psp, I am utterly disgusted. Once I was offered "for £200, a set of dvds of all games, emulators and roms and apps".

I personally will not have software that I have created sold in this way. Emulator authors rarely ever get financial credit for their work and this wave of piracy now really is hurting this poor excuse for a scene.

Want to know where the coders have gone? Ask those people you buy your pirated movies and games from...
