View Full Version : Hardcore Gamers "Insatiable?"

Ever since Nintendo's E3 press conference this year, much talk has been bandied about claiming the company has abandoned the hardcore gamer (or just "core gamer," as Nintendo likes to say). The company took its recent Media Summit event in San Francisco to directly reach out to the enthusiast press and hardcore gamers with several new titles like a Punch-Out! remake, the turn-based strategy game Fire Emblem DS, and a sequel to the Japanese shooter Sin and Punishment. But speaking with VentureBeat, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime laments that we gamers are never satisfied.

"The gaming enthusiast that buys a tremendous amount of games is truly insatiable," Fils-Aime says. "As an example, in March, we launched Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In April, we launched Mario Kart. In later April, we launched Wii Fit. Then, in July, at E3, they say, 'where are the games?' They say they want the next Mario game. Super Mario Galaxy isn't even a year old yet."

While we here at IGN Nintendo were pretty happy with the Media Summit last week, Reggie still appears exasperated with the core market. "We believe today that we have shown a plethora of games and genres that can satisfy the most casual to the most core. Even that doesn't seem like it's enough."

What do you think? Should Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii be enough to satisfy us for the entire year? Should we be content to keep playing last year's Mario Galaxy? Let us know in the comments below.

WiiFit is not hardcore.

WiiFit is not hardcore.

I wouldn't say that Mario Galaxy is either...except maybe a hardcore P.I.T.A. 3-D is fun and everything, but I personally miss good old-fashioned 2-D platformers.

I'm with you in that. We need a new Super Mario World/ Super Mario Bros. 3. 3d mario is great and all, but there's no reason they can't keep with their roots and make a new (I mean truly new) 2d mario game complete with huge worlds and awesome items.

I havent tried Galaxy or Sunshine.
Mario 64 however was a great game.

64 was great. Galaxy was great. Sunshine was an awful disappointment.

I also wouldn't call Mario Kart Wii 'hardcore', unless you count the obsessive Japanese world champions in the time trial rankings. For that matter, SSBB isn't really that hardcore either. Better online capabilities could have made it so, but not as it currently stands.

Hardcore gamers want games with high production values and multiplayer content. Try giving us a good Zelda-based MMO and we'll be happy.

we need Mario World 2 or Mario Bros 4 for wiiware....... even a real game, I would buy it.

Mario galaxy is great but 3d controls are frustrating compared to the 2d marios.

"Core" gamers would be more satisfied if they'd quit over simplifying our games. I got bored with Galaxy after a few hours, the only thing worth playing were the boss battles which I played when my mom reached them. I got more enjoyment out of the SM64 port for the DS.

As for Brawl, I also had all of the characters and most stages unlocked by the end of the first day. Too easy. I can guarantee if Nintendo would make a generous donation of a devkit to VALVe............need I say more?

grossafe: come on, this was Yoshi World and has pretty much nothing to do with the Mario Bros serie. I was talking about a real sequel to mario world.
