news from engadget (http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/23/playstation-home-hacked-the-search-for-backup-exploits-begins/)

Hackers, like life, will find a way. Sony knows that all too well thanks to the PSP, but so far the PlayStation 3 has stood strong in the face of legions of nerds trying to find a way to exploit it. A potentially major breakthrough may have been made, though, as well-known PS3 hacker StreetskaterFU (we've no idea what he's going for with that name -- really) has managed to decrypt the beta client for Sony's PlayStation Home service. Curious devs can now poke around in the files looking for a way to exploit the newish in-game XMB functionality, potentially allowing homebrew apps and game backups without hard drive swapping. There's no guarantee it will lead anywhere in the end, but you don't care either way, right? Our upstanding readership would never participate in such heinously illegal activities.

From a homebrew point of view this could be very interesting

Thanks Engadget. Because you decided to post this news, no doubt Sony will see it and thus change the encryption on the files, making any subsequent hacks that can be found, useless.

As well, considering that this is Home, Sony will force updates to use it, which is alot easier than forcing the updates now, since they can put protocols in place on the Home servers ceasing anyone with altered copies and/or old versions from using it.

Although, even if Sony didn't know these protocols would no doubt still work anyhow. So, its a moot point, a hack through won't ever work, because Home will need to run first to make the hack work and Sony could simply make it not run if the versions don't match.

What we need is a lasting hack; something that can be run ONCE and its done, the PS3 then contains the hack until its upgraded; at least that would buy hackers time to figure out CFW, which in my opinion is the ONLY way to go for anyone who wants to enjoy their PS3 for anything other than emulators or homebrew.

As well, considering Sony shut out BD-J homebrew, I have a gut feeling they won't care to what ends they must go to shut out all other homebrew, especially if it can run games using the full extent of PS3 hardware.
