View Full Version : Square Enix speaks out on Chrono Trigger piracy

Square Enix has reacted to the rampant piracy of Chrono Trigger DS by declaring itself to be "vigorously against" the illegal distribution of games, and warning that it expects a sharp drop in Chrono Trigger sales as a result. As we reported yesterday, the eagerly anticipated RPG shipped with a whole series of piracy checks, only for hackers to break those within hours of the game being dumped online for download. It's difficult not to feel sorry for Square Enix, and equally hard to see practical solutions.

In slightly happier news (well, for the fans, anyway), the (Japan-based) Chrono Trigger fan club is giving away copies of the game's soundtrack (as seen above) to 3,000 customers who actually buy the game -- two of which will be autographed by composer Yasunori Mitsuda. See: it pays not to yarr.

I don't really see a problem. Its the same damned game as the original snes. Why would anyone want to pirate it? Just download the snes rom and ZSnes.

This ain't good considering this is the same problem that plauged the PSP and in the end caused it to become the miserable commercial wreck it is right now.

piracy is not the reason the PSP sucks, it sucks because it's games suck and are quite lacking, especially compered to that of the DS. And the thing falls apart in your hand. The PSP is in it's own right is a PIECE OF CRAP.

Piracy is just an excuse a developer uses to say they don't want anything to do with a crappy console. Look at the Playstation the most pirated system out there and it ****ign rocked every bodies socks off... until it got to it's 3rd generation.

This is the easiest worst gen of consoles ever. Maybe it has to do with everyone having highspeed internet and ripping games maybe not. Give it time maybe it will get better but the way the economy and inflation is i have all my systems moded and flashed + dl games, otherwise i wouldn't be able to play.

I don't know what psp you guys have but mine does not "fall apart your hands"...
Why pirate a game that is just a rerelease?

Perhaps the rerelease is better than the original... and some people are too cheap to actually buy the game, and get by using the excuse "Its cheaper to just get a flash cart."

I myself am a bit guilty of that excuse, I'm too lazy to get a job, but most of the games I downloaded I deleted because I had no motivation to play it. Buying the game gives you more motivation to play it :P

Basically, pirates are gamers too cheap to save up money for the real game. (I really should get a job)

I know that I'm able to just find it and download it to play on a DS emu, but I already paid for Chrono Trigger DS in full... so I COULD do it just to play it... but I'm not bothering.

They wont see a 'sudden drop' in sales. The pirates would never have bought it in the first place, they wont loos any sales at all. Those that would pay for the game still will, those that wouldn't have, still wont. Pirates are NOT customers so they dont effect sales.
