The latest episode of Electric Playground brought with it a shocking (yet somewhat believable) report -- they claimed to have learned from an unspecified source that Electronic Arts is canceling the development of new titles in the Need for Speed series. When they asked for a comment from EA, a spokesperson responded with a statement that neither confirmed nor denied the report.

We tend to handle rumors without named sources with a bit more trepidation than others, but the cancellation of EA's 14-year-old racing franchise isn't completely outside the realm of possibilities. After all, the gaming industry juggernaut has sailed through fairer economic waters, and the latest installment in the supposedly canceled series, Need for Speed: Undercover, currently holds a Metacritic rating of 65 -- which also happens to be the exact number of people who purchased the game. We'll let you know when we hear more.

What a joy it would be to see that series die. I loved ya, Need For Speed, back in the times of "The Need For Speed", "Need For Speed II" and "Need For Speed III - Hot Pursuit" and actually the ps2 version of "Need For Speed Hot Pursuit 2". All other games have been utter crap.

EA are stupid. All they have to do is ask the fans on the NFS forums what they liked and what they want. Hot Pursuit had it right. "Open roads", exotic cars and a police chase when you break the law.

It's simple really:
We don't want modified cars, NOS or any other street racing rubbish. There are other games for that.

It's about driving dream cars and seeing if you really can evade the police.

Road & Track must hate the last few offerings.

Test Drive Unlimited has been the best "Need For Speed" game since Most Wanted.

^^ amen!

loved "the need for speed" once underground came out thought was bullshite, loved most wanted then hated all after!

test drive unlimited is better then new NFS games.

EA must really not care if they wont ask the fans?

Last one I owned was Need for Speed Underground Rivals for PSP. After seeing how the series was getting repetitive I ignored it and since moved on.
Its sad to see the series die as well as the thps :( they are just old and new games like burnout paradise and skate will carry on the torch.
Everything has to come to an end sometime
