I'm using avg, having no trouble. I have winclam on my other old pc, but I could say which is better, never had any problems with virus with either.

I'm currently using AVG Anti Virus 8 (free version) and I have no problems with it right now. Wraggster, maybe try uninstalling your copy and then reinstall it?

I've been using AVG as well, it used to be better before they started making the versions you have to pay for though.
The free versions have lost quality, but I still think they're currently the best free antivirus.

Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html) by far (way better than AVG).

Clamwin (http://www.clamwin.com/) works well for me.

Take a look at reviews, Clamwin sucks. Avast has won many awards. (http://www.avast.com/eng/awards.html)

I did, it does what I need and not more.

Any good antivirus will 'take over your computer' as you say, because that is the best way to minimize the damage a virus can do and detect them as fast as possible. Otherwise you have to rely on something like timed scans.

AFAIK AVG is still the top rated free AV, and they have always had a pay version, there just used to be less of a difference.
