It's apparently not quite as far along as the newly-announced SDXC card format, but Sony and SanDisk have just announced that they're jointly developing a new Memory Stick format (tentatively dubbed the "Memory Stick format for Extended High Capacity") that'll reach the same dizzying 2TB heights as its SD counterpart. There's no more details on the format beyond that, unfortunately, but the pair has also announced that they're working on a new Memory Stick HG Micro format as well, which promises to boast a blazing 60MBps maximum data transfer speed. That's made possible, in part, thanks to a new 8-bit parallel interface with an increased 60MHz interface clock frequency. Sadly, there's no indication of a release date either of 'em, with the companies only going so far as to say that format licensing for both new formats is "scheduled to start in 2009."

Undoubtedly a significant development.
But I feel slightly nervous about the idea of all that data held on
a single tiny removable device that's potentially easily misplaced, stolen, broken or
fatally corrupted.

Too bad you'll need to mortgage your house to afford one.

Price aside I am glad to hear stuff like this is being worked on :)

As I stated elsewhere, these are the SPECIFICATIONS for larger sticks, not the sticks themselves. You won't be getting a 2 TB stick anytime soon, they're simply now possible once memory densities get that high.

Funny, I had a dream the other day that I had a (not sure how many) terabyte memory card. All I remember was putting the flash card in the psp and scrolling down the list of games, and it seemed to go on forever. Technology always amazes me, and the thought of fitting thousands of advanced games on a tiny piece of plastic and metal, is mind-boggling. The funny part is, we'll always be clamoring for MORE SPACE.
