At last week's 2009 CES, Sony announced that a GPS peripheral is slated to find its way to North American shores. The device has been available in Japan and Europe for a couple of years now, and it looks like Americans will finally get a chance to use the mapping device. Hopefully this has given the developers enough time to perfect software for the peripheral when it makes its American debut. Although no firm date or pricing has been revealed, the device is said to provide 2D and 3D location maps and driving directions via UMD. The promise of downloadable city guides will empower users with even more customization options. With the growing popularity of GPS devices, introducing this feature alongside the PSP's existing multimedia playback functionality may just well reposition it as the preeminent handheld.
