Dark Alex is back with a new custom firmware for the PSP, heres the release details:

Here, the quick fix.

5.00 M33-6
----------

This update is a try to fix memory stick low speed since 3.80.

Instructions: Copy UPDATE folder /PSP/GAME/ and run.

If you come from a version prior to 5.00 M33, put sony update as 500.PBP in same folder, or let the program download it for you using a wifi connection.

Changes in 5.00 M33-5:

- A setting has been added to recovery, that, when enabled it may increase memory stick reading speed. (only on the psp, not in the pc).
By default it is disabled. If you installed 3.71 fatmsmod, do not use this setting, as its perfomance with 3.71 driver has not been tested.
Instead, reinstall 5.00 m33-4 using dc8 and update to 5.00 m33-5

Changes in 5.00 M33-6:

- Fixed a bug that made unbootable psp without memory stick or with a bad one.

The included file fat_comparison.html contains a comparison of perfomance between the 5.00 fat driver, the 3.71 one, and the 5.00 one with the speed up hack during the read of an iso.
The test was done on the game Valkyrie Profile in cso format in march33 mode. Other games, modes and applications different than iso reading showed similar results.

works great, specially the speed hack for the M33 driver

this feature was the one that made me update, at the cost of loosing the custom background and waves I like, cause I was still on 4.01M33-2, but is ok

Seems that DAX did it again, great work

edit: I also like that when you plug in the usb cable the psp conects to the PC automatically, I guess this was from the 5.00 update, but it's new to me hehe:p

WOW.
This works so much better than I expected.

For everyone who is expecting a small, barely noticible speed increse, you're in for a treat.

Thank you DaX!

Useful patches indeed.

I'm guessing he released this for the people who couldn't flash the 3.71 files themselves.

Thanks anyway.

I think the previous method of installing the 3.71 files would make them be erased for every firmware upgrade (i.e. increase in main firmware number), thus it would have to be re-installed, whilst this will keep the fix even for future upgrades.

They aren't now anymore. :o

So is it safe to upgrade to this when using the 3.71 fatsmod and not use the M33 driver? Because I have no Pandora and wondering if I can upgrade to new M33 firmware at all now.

Expect another update soon - the "fast" memstick patch still has trouble. Try this: while the patch is enabled for the vsh, go to System Settings and select Format Memstick. You'll wind up with just those 0 length .IND files and no directories. Any attempt to write files over the USB connection also wind up writing nothing. So this speeds up reads, but totally kills writing in all my tests.

On the plus side, POPS is working again... finally! I couldn't play ANY psx games in -4, but now they all work again. So I'm very VERY happy with this update, even if the writing is still slow. :D

I'd be expecting a DDCv9 soon after the bugs are fixed.

Re-update to 5.00 m33 that way you get the original driver back.

It won't let me re-update to a lower firmware.

Edit: Nevermind, I had to download the recovery flasher. Thanks.

may i ask something.. i can’t install the 5.00 M33-6 into my PSP fat.. the file always says that “The game cannot be started, The data is corrupted.” Others said that check my recovery mode by holding the trigger R and power on the PSP.. but it doesn’t work for my PSP fat..

Oh my God, I hadn't a clue that another update to the M33 custom firmware was up, I'll be on it now. Keep up the great work, Dark_Alex, your work is always appreciated!

I've had some problems with "speedup MS access" screwing up my MS. Every now and then, MS access goes insane, and locks up the system for a very long time, requiring a hard (yank the battery) reset. The problem doesn't go away until a reformat.

It may be a quirk of the Photofast 5400, however.
