Against all odds, the PlayStation 2 is still hanging around, though it's ailing rapidly. According to Sony though, the PlayStation 3 will last even longer. Much longer.
Speaking with T3 (via Computer and Video Games), Sony representatives said, "PS2 was still going strong after eight years, and with the power the Cell processor provides, not to mention the fact that PS3 is inherently future-proof, we see the PS3 sales curve far outlasting that of PS2."

Meanwhile, most analysts seem to think that new consoles will be hitting in 2011 or 2012. The PlayStation 3 is indeed a powerful console, so it'll be interesting to see if developers can continue unlocking the machine's full potential four or even five years down the road.

Ya know... long term, hanging onto the PS3 for a while might actually make sense. The PS2 is stupid cheap to make now, and darn near pure profit. In a while the PS3 will be cheaper to make... potentially quite a bit cheaper than whatever next console MS & Nintendo come out with.

Not an ideal strategy, but, well, under the circumstances... not coming out with the PS4 for a while probably makes sense. The PS2 competed well with the graphically superior XBox because it was less expensive. By the time the "XBox 720" or whatever comes out, the PS3 will be cheaper to make & sell.

I dunno. Maybe.

could very well be true. PS2 sucked at the start as did the PS3. PS3 has the most impressive gaming library now and it will continue to expand even greater with already great upcoming releases at shore

Make the PS3 region free with PS1 and PS2 then it would go a long way towards future proof

As noted for a while, PS3 lasting a long time makes sense
The PS2 lasting this long is really surprising because no other competitor is still having games produced for last-gen systems, so the PS3 is set for the future and by then it'll cost lest to develope and they'll make more of a profit from it after a while.
