I saw a post online saying its possible to hook up an external usb HDD to the wii to play movies and stuff through mplayerwii.

Anyone tried this?

just tried it, it is providing your drive is FAT32 formatted

yup. if your Ext drive is in NTSC format, you can just create a partition for wii on the drive, and format that to FAT32. That's what i did. You can also play backed up games that way. It requires cIOS36 REV 10 or newer though.
