You have to choose AMD platform and not intel.Let me tell you my opinion for cheap and reliable:

-Motherboard:Choose an Asrock,MSI or Biostar model anything as long as it is AM2+.Onboard multichannel soundcard and lan are on any models.(I own an Asrock A780FullHD model)
-CPU:Choose between AMD Athlon X2 6000+ or Athlon 64 X2 7750 with their retail heatsink. They are both enough for current and future gaming and their stock heatsink is also enough unless you want to overclock them, but o/c is not needed for this.
-Memory:Buy 2 pcs of 2gb (2x2GB)DDR2 ram(800Mhz or 1066Mhz)any brand will do your job and you will have 4gb in total, enough even for vista x64
-Case:Any case will do your job its a matter of taste. Some cases have inside PSU (400-450W)wich will save your money and is ok for your system(dont listen to others for expensive PSU,you dont need it for this pc)
-Graphics card:Any nvidia 9500gt ot ati 4650 is cheap and enough for your budget pc.You will play games fine on 1440x900 resolution and medium to high settings.
Add any sata2 500gb HD and a cheap sata DVDRW and you have a cheap, reliable and capable gaming machine.

i guess kojiro7 had said everything, what's the reason for the upgrade.

im an intel user but if the budget is tight, AMD is the way to go.
