Fans of DC Comics can look forward to DC Universe Online, but until this morning, fans of Marvel Comics did not have an MMO to look forward to. That has changed, as newly-formed Gazillion Entertainment has revealed its existence and announced a partnership to develop MMO games based on Marvel Entertainment properties. The licensing agreement means that Gazillion can make games that feature thousands of Marvel's characters, including Wolverine, Hulk, and Iron Man.

However, if you're looking for a World of Warcraft-type of game with Marvel heroes, you might have to wait a bit. Gazillion says its first project is a casual MMO for "younger audiences" and based on the Super Hero Squad, a stylized line of action figures aimed at kids 3 and up.

After that, Gazillion looks to deliver an MMO for the rest of us with Marvel Universe, which will be published for the PC and consoles. The company says details regarding Marvel Universe will be released in the coming months, so it's sounding like an E3 appearance could very well be a possibility. It's safe to say that Marvel has been on a roll the past decade or so, with huge movie franchises like Spider-Man, The X-Men, Iron Man, and more. An MMO based on this incredibly popular universe would seem a no-brainer, but an earlier attempt by Cryptic (Marvel Universe Online) fizzled out two years ago and the game was canceled.

Gazillion is a new startup that has revealed that it has purchased four existing studios. Marvel Universe is being worked on by Gargantuan. Super Hero Squad is being worked on by Amazing Society. Then there's NetDevil, which is currently working on Jumpgate Evolution for Codemasters. And finally there is SmartyCard, which works online games and web sites for kids.
