Nintendo's Wii is the home console that sees the least amount of use in the US, according to new research by Nielsen.

In the company's State of the Video Gamer report for the month of December 2008, the Wii had an average usage of five days, compared to 6.8 for the PlayStation 3 and 7.1 days for the Xbox 360.

The average usage session clocks in at 58 minutes for Nintendo's home console, while the PlayStation 3 records 64 minutes and the Xbox 360 78 minutes.

The report also collected GameCube, original Xbox and PlayStation 2 data usage, finding that the Wii and GameCube show very similar patterns.

"Predominant users of the Wii and GameCube are likely to use these consoles at most once a week and for fewer minutes and the fewest number of sessions compared to the other two groups of consoles," noted the report.

The study also found that the largest demographic for PC gaming was the female gamer, aged 25 and over, and Microsoft's Solitaire is the most played game, with over 17 million players during the month.

yes, because when it comes to the common mans Wii.
it usually only contains wii sports and some box office hits.

its like comparing the great viewer ratings that the

Paradise Hotel VS Heroes

the common man will rather have some cheap entertainment over something with a story.

well i exchanged my xbox360 at gamestop
for a used Wii....

and i am in no way bashing Wii sports, I love boxing...

just that id rather spend my time playing RPG's over playing something easy and repetative...

and pointing to paradise hotel...

yes i love pretty girls....

but hey there's a difference between girls and sl**'s

also aiming towards every other reality series ever made...

waste of airing time!!!

Perhaps this is because the Nintendo Wii has a broader demographic than the PS3 and Xbox 360 which are mainly used by young males with more time to devote to long games.

Well this proves all of those studies saying that wii is like a pandemic and people buy it cause they think it is cool and don't play it much or ever again... This kind kind of show's my gaming trend with the wii, maybe once a week and way more ps3 and 360 time.

Goes without saying, is it any wonder people would use their ps3/360 more often, what does the wii have to offer? other than a few good gaming experiences, nothing else to settle for, it's too basic, i bet wii2 won't even scratch a 360/PS3 performance neither, again, both microsoft and sony will double the power of the wii2 when it's out.

yes but what about homebrew, neither the ps3 nor the xbox360 have much of that, it would make a revolution if any of them got that, but right now they dont

Understandable.

X360 or PS3 are for the dedicated gamer, who will forgo sleep and maybe urination, just to finish that latest game.

Wii, in contrast, is what gets all of the attention when unspecified family members visit, and they all want to play that bowling game.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say this but; Nintendo did it to themselves. They COULD have had better games, hardware, software but they chose not any of these things and becuase of it the image of the old NES, SNES and 64 days are long gone. Nintendo has pushed aside the hardcore gamers that brought them up to this level that they are on and accept any BS shovleware that any company is willing to buy in and make for the Wii. Most the games suck, theres no exclusives, it has the video power of a beefed up PS2. The only thing that has kept me from selling my Wii is the fact that I twilight hacked it. If it wasnt for that I would have hauled it in to Gameplop months ago....

They did it to them selves.. All the way to the bank lol. If given the choice they'd do it to themselves again too. It was genius.

Very true, but the ps3 and 360 don't need homebrew, you get super offers before that :P

Am I the only one noticing how utterly stupid the comments about this being a bad thing for the Wii are?

Lets round these numbers to make the math easier:

Wii = 60 /5 = 12
PS3 = 65 /5 = 13
360 = 80 /5 = 16

this is an AVERAGE!

This is like using the density of 3 objects to determine which weighs the most. This could work perfectly fine... IF the 3 objects are the same size, but a quick glance at the sales figures will show that they are not.

again, we'll round the ratios to make the math simple. In the US, Wii has 23M, PS3 has 9M, and 360 has 17M. Multiply this be the average use and we get:

Wii = 12x23 = 276

PS3 = 13x9 = 117

360 = 16x17 = 272

ooh, the numbers came out closer than I thought they would, so I'll go back and test this with the exact figures.

Wii = 58x22.7 = 1316.6
PS3 = 64x8.3 = 531.2
360 = 78x17 = 1326

So sadly, my original belief that the Wii actually gets greater playtime than the 360 is wrong, but it still holds about even with it. There is less than 1% difference between the Wii and the 360, when you look at OVERALL playtime, and not just "average" playtime.

the same thing can be done for the usage:
Wii = 5x22.7 = 114
PS3 = 6.8x8.3 = 57
360 = 7.1x17 = 121

Yes, but what is the standard deviation of these numbers?

Grey Acumen

The standard deviation could be anything, but that's true for all the consoles. I'm not really worried about which is ahead myself, but the fact that for all the number gathering these big statistical companies come out with, they can't interpret those numbers properly for crap.

Their new demographic isn't the type to play games regularly, or even monthly.
