Think The Conduit is the biggest Sega first-person-shooter news this year? ... You're right. But it's not the only Sega-related FPS being published on an unexpected platform. A team of homebrewers is working on a game called Hypertension for Windows, Linux ... and Dreamcast. Great news for all of you who just bought the system!

Hypertension is a reimagining of Blood, made in the Doom-based EDGE engine. The use of fairly antiquated technology, and source material, seem appropriate for a game being released on a console that came out in 1999 After the break, you can see some footage of the current alpha version of Hypertension, which is looking very Doomy. TDGMods has yet to specify a release date for the game, but it's not like there's a rush at this point. The Dreamcast will still be old.

Blood was a great game.

I remember finishing the whole thing!

You could decide if you want to use up a whole can of spraypaint as a bomb or use it little by little as a flamethrower.

There were little spots in the game that were callbacks from movies and other stuff.

I remember you could find the frozen corpse of the guy from the Shining in a maze and find Jason's shack from Friday the 13th. And then Caleb would say something funny.

Great game. I hope this FPS is half as good.

I'm guessing they will do both, free download and a limited edition disc.

It will be free, the engine they are using is based off DOOM open source.

The two don't correlate. Just because you use open source code doesn't mean you can't sell it. Lot's of companies sell GPL software. The GPL simply says you have to provide the source code to the public. There's nothing about selling the program, and certainly nothing about providing the data files free of charge. Notice how id provided the Doom source code, but not the WAD file? You could see the same here with this company.

So it would be nice if the game was free, but don't think that because they used the Doom source they HAVE to provide it for free.

They don't, because it was their own work that went into it. The DOOM engine was used for many commercial games in the mid-90's until '97 so this game is no different from then, just the engine is now freeware.

That's a different kettle of fish since those devs PAID id to use the Doom code. You could still do that - buy a license to use the Doom code and then not have to give out anything free. Don't think anyone is crazy enough to do that, though. :D

Well if you can sell GPL'ed code, then I didn't realize that. The only thing the would have to do would be make there own custom iWAD from the ground up.
