In contrast to his normal high-contrast PR coverage, Sega’s speedy mascot Sonic the Hedgehog has surprisingly kept below the radar and sprung a surprise by making a sudden appearance on the Apple App Store.
The game is seemingly a more-or-less straight conversion of the 1991 original Mega Drive offering and uses on-screen controls to direct and jump your character.
Two views are available - one stretches the image to fit the iPhone's entire screen, with transparent control overlays, whilst the second maintains the original 320x224 resolution by adding a border.

Sega’s debut iPhone release, Super Monkey Ball, topped the Apple download charts for several weeks and has proved one of the most popular all-time games for the system.
Whether Sonic can rival the accelerometer-friendly conversion of Monkey Ball is yet to be seen, but if it does be sure to expect further Sonic titles on the system soon.
Sonic the Hedgehog is available now and costs £3.49.
