Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced its long-term plans for the Lord of the Rings franchise, promising multiple games spanning different genres and target demographics.

The company has partnered with both The Saul Zaentz Company and New Line Productions, meaning that it has secured rights to create videogame adaptations based on both the literary and film versions of Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings franchise.

The Lord of the Rings: Aragon's Quest, a family-friendly adventure announced last week, will be Warner's first game in the franchise since rights reverted to the publisher at the end of 2008. The Wii version is being developed by Headstrong Games, with the PlayStation 2, PSP and Nintendo DS versions handled by TT Fusion.

"The Lord of the Rings franchise is world renowned for its captivating adventures, and we are creating new experiences in the game space designed to appeal to a wide array of consumer tastes from core to casual," said Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment president Martin Tremblay.

"We are looking forward to continuing The Lord of the Rings’ amazing legacy with new videogames that capture and expand upon elements from the trilogy," added Fredrica Drotos of The Saul Zaentz Company.
