The queues may have seemed smaller than this time last year, but mobile operator O2 has stated that the new Apple iPhone 3GS is way ahead of where its predecessor was at the same stage in its first day on sale.
Some stores have already sold out of the device, though O2 states that fresh stock will be rolled out to it network tomorrow.
“The iPhone 3GS has got off to an incredible start with news reaching us that by lunchtime we'd sold more iPhone 3GS handsets than we sold iPhone 3G devices on launch day last year,” an O2 spokesperson told Pocket Lint.

“Sales are still going strong and we expect to have sold 50 per cent more iPhone 3GS handsets than last year's launch by the close of business today.”
Footfall at O2 shops is apparently ten times above the normal level, and traffic on its website has seen a 150 per cent increase.
It was also revealed that the black iPhone 3GS SKU is outselling its white cousin by a ratio of 3:1.
