The Lowdown: Doukutsu Monogatari -- aka Cave Story -- is one of the biggest underground successes in recent years. A free amateur game from Japan, Cave Story has quietly spread its charming 8-bit looks and brilliant but challenging Symphony of the Night-style action to gamers the world over. And now it may be coming to the PSP as an official release.

The Obstacles: There are a few logistical problems facing a PSP conversion of Cave Story, unfortunately. It was originally released for free on PC, and Sony may be loathe to publish a game that can be acquired freely elsewhere. Especially one with such simple graphics. Worse, the game's creator seems averse to the notion of his creation being distributed for a price. But if these issues can be smoothed over, this could be one of the PSP's greatest moments.

Why doesn't Sony just release this as a free Memory Stick downloadable game. So far, there's been no official Memory Stick games. The only thing that runs off the memory stick is Homebrew and simple media files. If Sony released this as a free title, a memory stick game with Sony's official blessing, this would please the game's author AND maybe make a little peace with all of the PSP Homebrew fans Sony keeps screwing with.

Then again, considering Sony's track record for terrible mismanagement of the PSP, I seriously doubt that would ever happen.
