Happy Easter everybody. To celebrate the holiday I desided to do a little easter hunt.

Through out the day, I will post new screenshots regarding the current progress of Monkey64 (so check back freqently).

"Eh?" you say? Wasn't I on break?

Well yes I was. Yet that did not stop me from doing a few things here and there on the emu. Not major. Just felt bored on wendsday durring lunch so tried a few things. As well also a little work on saturday (my only day off from work this week due to milestones).

While mario64 is still not working (and still my top priority), a few other games have started to improve.

So how does this hunt play out? Well it's simple. I will be hiding new screenshots once and a while in old post (not my post but any random post). They will all be in the archive section.

First one to find the screenshot is to report back here (with a link to the post) where they will be credited for the find.

So check here first to see what has been found before you go off on the hunt.

First shot goes up soon. Good luck. :)

Yes, It is the main menu. Ingame shows 3d but nothing reconisable.

On the Rugrats shot, Its hard to see but you can make out Didi (the mother) in the shot as well as the back of a chair.

What ever Frame says at the bottom of the image is the actual fps when the picture was taken. Quest64 does run pretty fast when not in diolog mode (usualy 10-15fps, 4-8fps in diolog mode).

#9 has me currious. I am starting to wonder if 2d is not working because of allignment issues. on the PC memory does not need to be alligned. On the PSP, addresses must be alligned.

That might explain why the giant ship shows fine and everything else shows so so. Actualy even right before that scene there was a bird that flys by and for the first frame the image is perfect then after that it goes corrupt.

Aww man I really suck at easter egg hunting. I was to slow to find any(.)(.)
Anyway PSmonkey, maybe you answerd this already but are the textures pretty much the 2D part?

PSmonkey
April 17th, 2006, 17:38
textures & sprites all run though the same code to load up. I think there is a memory alignment issue as to why some is ok and some is bad. Yet that does not solve all 2d as I know there are other issues in the conversion from n64 to psp that are not proper (n64 suported many types of sprites).

Oh you guys. There will only be 1 more egg this afternoon and its from iris. 9 shots is enough for now on m64 untill i get some more progress.

Nice screenshots but I have one question. PSMonkey or whomever can answer this, the reason we can't play Zelda: OOT and other games right now is because if their size right? The PSP doesn't have enough available RAM to hold all the memory, am I correct? If thats so, then how does Neo Geo CDz work? There Roms or ISOs are larger than some N64 games yet it doesnt have any problems playing them. Can anyone help clarify this question, its been bugging me for a while.

Thanks guy and keep up the good work Monkey. Your emulator is history in the making!

Mysteryman
April 17th, 2006, 20:20
Those screen shots look great, keep up the amazing work.

BrooksyX
April 17th, 2006, 20:22
Its called neo geo <big>CD</big>. which means that all the game data that is needed is streamed on to the ram and stuff that isnt needed isnt called for and when it is the data is loaded on to the ram.

Okay that probably isnt 100% correct but i am sure it is somewhat close.

Accordion
April 17th, 2006, 20:27
not that i know anything

the neogeo CD uses just that , CDs so the machine is meant to stream data from the CD in the drive, so i guess the emulator, erm, emulates that and streams the data needed at the time from the memory stick as if it was a CD.

but the N64 uses cartridges and they have to be loaded fully,((i might be talking rubbish here) the cart becomes part of the circuit so you cant only load some of it) and the emulator must copy this as it is how the games run.
like i said i dont really know anything im ust a newb who likes to create his own reality

ha bigmace got there first, but i guess i am sort of right.

what game is absolutly playable (even at 1 fps) on m64, if any?

PSmonkey
April 17th, 2006, 21:46
depends what you mean. Do you mean without any errors or with gfx errors but fully playable?

If the first then pong.v64 is you're heop :P
If the second one, Bust a move 3 (E) seems to play fine, Quest64 is playable bar from gfx issues (and at a decent fps), Rampage 1 & 2 are playable, and few others i can't remember off hand.

Ok few things.

1) Last egg was posted. It's from Sniper's Iris map in development (it looks fantastic).

2) I took a 5 sec look at textures again and converted some QWORD pointers down to BYTES (not sure why i left it Qword in the first place). It helped improved the speed in some places.

3) I desided I am going to give you guys all 1 final present. Later tonight I will be posting a video of me playing quest64 on Monkey64. It will be crude (because m64 still is very buggy) but it should still be fun to watch.

Note, all but 1 quest vid were taken in low res. My camera limits how much you can record by size. So if large, i can only get like 15 seconds worth, if low res i can get about 80 seconds worth.

I would like to accept donations in the future because 1/3 of it is going to Zilmar & the PJ64 team (i've already talked to him about it and he is fine with it and me mentioning it). I too plan to donate on the next release.

I take it those box-y flashing on Monkey64 is coming from the game not a weird reation with the camera?

Also please let us know how you fixed the offical Nintendo games allowing them to load. Kinda intrested as to why it works with others, but not offical releases...so just for curiosity's sake.

PS.

Mabey it would be good to sticky an "explaination" of Donkey in the forums, with a *READ* tag....then delete/ban anyone who brings it up. Keep some threads from getting derailed.

Alot of flickering at the moment is due to me not double buffering the display. Everything is just being drawn to the same screen. I do this because I am having a few issues when trying to double buffer. It will be fixed.

Other flickering is from texture issues that require fixing.

Once I figure out why mario & others dont work, you can bet I will be here explaining why. :P

Half of it is Tlb emulation. Half of it is nintendo stuff is more strict on the hardware (like fails if not accurate), or nintendo pushes the hardware a bit more.

Sure games like quest64 are still quite complex but in general 3rd party coders are not so strict when writing code.

Eventualy I will find the thing holding me back and get more roms running.

I did how ever fix a small bug that makes quest64 even better. It was really ignorance on my part. I needed to turn backface culling to Counter ClockWise (which is what f3dex microcode used) and that pretty much solved alot.

I fixed some PI DMA Bugs & also There are some recent improvements in weltris which now shows some of the 3d menu but crashes in game. Not sure why it crashes yet.

I'll get some shots up later today.

Well thats about it for now. :P

oh yeah. Here I've been meaning to add this in but been a bit lazy.

Now Monkey suports full screen. :D :D

The game is a bit streached not because it's streaching a 320x240 image to full screen. It's insted modifying the viewport to fullscreen. So the 3d is still drawn in a [-1,1] format but now -1 = 0 and 1 = 480.

:P

PSmonkey
April 24th, 2006, 23:56
game is about the same. My shot has a low fps because of constantly trying to take a decent screenshot (and it kept sending me to the pause menu). Quest at the moment is around 11-14fps in the start of the game. Not sure how it is later on. never tried that far.

--edit--
the fps is low from screenshots since dumping vram to a bmp takes a few seconds which causes for the next update of the fps counter to be inacurate. As well my fps updates are not very frequent so it takes a few seconds to update the fps counter.

Ok not much progress. I spent last night debuging mario again. I found out it has some serious pi dma transfers. This is bad and what is posibly breaking the game. So i am gonna dig into it some more today.

So instead of stretching to full screen cant u just make it display full screen normally?

Actualy it is. When the psp recieves the polygons. It's rendering them to the psp res. That is why it looks better then a 320x240 image streached full screen.

It's posible to tune it a bit so it dont look so streached on the psp screen but at the moment its fine.

drquack02
April 25th, 2006, 20:10
Hey Monkey could you give me a little rundown on what pi dma transfers are (assuming you have time, since you are a busy person).

When you say this is bad do you mean in relivence to Monkey64s possible development, or simply another obsticle that will take time to get through?

Would be a shame to lose Nintendo roms. Anyways keep up the good work and thanks for your time!

Just a difficult thing to get though is all.

PI transfer is when the N64 DMA (Direct Memory Access) or Copies a large chunk of data from Rom to Ram/RDRAM. It's a fast way to move sizable chunks of data then to do byte by byte.

Mario64 does a bunch of transfers properly but 3 specific transfers become invalid. I am not sure if it's with in the block of code that made it invalid or if it was invalid before being passed to the block of code.

It's not really complex but I need more time to probe for the bug.

lol. Not close tho. I do reverse debuging on the psp & pj64 at the same time. I find the entry point of a code block. check it on the psp to find what brached to it then keep working backwards.

So far I've traced it back to a tlb instruction. I think I went far back enough to find the different memory addresses for the different loads.

It goes (best i can figure out)

ERET (not sure why, I might have this wrong)

Increase Stack pointer
Store registers to stack
Load branch addr (the start of our function)
Load Addr for PI values <- Different after first 20 transfers
Load RDRAM_ADDR to A2
Load ROM_ADDR to A1
Load WR_LEN to A3
Branch to Addr (Loc for pif transfer)

Increase Stack Pointer
Store Registers to stack
Do Some Work
Load RDRAM_ADDR from Stack
Translate RDRAM ADDR
Store RDRAM_ADDR to PI_RDRAM_ADDR Reg
Load ROM_ADDR
TRanslate ROM_ADDR
Store ROM_ADDR to PI_ROM_ADDR
Load WR_LEN
Add -1 (odd it does this vs calling sub instruction)
Store WR_LEN to PI_WR_LEN
PI_DMA_WRITE triggered by previous instruction
...
...
Branch ...

... = Cleanup but I am not fully sure.

That is what I figured out so far in a nut shell. Atleast now I have an addr for where it gets the values from. So with more tracing. I can find out hopefuly what is writing to that specific address.

:( Hopefuly mario will be going soon. I dont want to have to reverse enginear the entire game in asm just to find the bug. :P

I have it setup now where I can make debug builds that give me more options (like break or debug at an addr, then either wait for input or just start printing the opcode list from that point). It helps in debuging.

PC<0x80327530> & PC<0x80337610> are magic locations in mario (J).

I realised posting on psp-hack forums is a waste of time (i wont return, even if the guy is banned again).

I would give the address of problems but I did not lable my notes very well in my notebook. So I dont know which one is it.

Sniper found 2 more games that do something (offroad & some majong game).

Thats all for now. maybe I will figure out more on mario later tonight.

I dont care what mario gives me. If it gives me anything even just playing with the freaking 3d head. I'm posting a build that same day it works.

No clue when that is.

So your build crashed each time those 2 adresses are in the program counter?

So your build crashed each time those 2 adresses are in the program counter?

Nope. Thoes are magic because they are the starting segment to two functions. The first one preps, the second is the function that stores the register values and triggers a PI transfer. :P

Find out where the inaccurate bug exsist.

Pretty much what I started with was knowing that invalid PI transfer were going on. The more I looked the more I found out that there are 3 invalid transfers after 20 good transfers. I now know where the function starts and know the address where the values are stored. Later tonight I will know where it is writing thoes values before calling a transfer. Hopefuly that will lead me to a single bad instruction or case so I can fix it and get mario working.

Anyways back to mario. Not much new. Pretty much at the moment debuging mario is like playing an rpg.

. Yay you enter a new town
. You search around to learn where to go in the town
. You meet the town people to get what you need
. You find a clue that tells you how to get to the next town
. You leave the current town for the next
. Repeat the above

Tis not fun. :P

Oh well. Hopefuly my quest will lead me to the holy grail.

No Iris updates atm. I've been flooded at work. I barly get an hour of work on m64 every few day. It sucks royaly.

Other then that I've been thinking about doing a render test to see if it might be better to do a render tree by textures

.Node
../....\
T1...T2 <- textures
/|\.../|\
sss.sss <- surfaces

This way less time is spent passing texture over multiple times when rendering the scene (ie area to the left might do texture 1, then texture 2, then texture 1 is used again on area right. Insted do all surfaces that use texture 1, then all surfaces using texture 2).

Still also need to do a emboss bumpmap test. :/

Hmm...level up your Enemy Lure materia a bit...

Its a shame work has been so busy for you, but its gotta come first.

Put in time whenever you want to.

You seem to be making amazing process working the number of hours you say you are. I was imagining someone sitting infront of a computer at 4am icing his hands down and typing away code..

So is this render test being done to target frames per second? It seems like having to re-render stuff would slow it down a bit...or is it for texture accuracy?

Also what are you trying to target with the emboss bumpmap?

Keep on truckin' ;)

Yay, I found the magical Super Mario Bos 3 flute that will warp me to the world 9.
:p

Anyways I realised that the value was constant so insted i started taping memory write opcodes and sure enough I found a nice small stack of 6 instances where it writes the bad value i am trying to trace. So now directly jumping to the first instance might help me speed this up faster.

The render test is for iris so mapers like produkt can push even more geoemtry and put more crapy psp developers to shame. :D

Emboss bumpmapping is to try adding advance rendering effects to make the game look nicer. Sure we wont get all xbox style crazy bump mapping but some simple bits to allow a level to look nicer is well worth it.

Well good news and bad news.

First I fixed my invalid PI Dma transfers (it was due to the rom being v64 format and I only byteswapped the first half of the rom). The bad news is it does jack shit for the rest of the game. :(

So i am back to square one.
A very big bummer. Oh well, ill get this game figured out sooner or later.

This is just my thoughts but i think you should choose a different game to work on, one that already loads like quest and get that running better and then come back to this problem with Nintendo's roms.

collect all the money together...

AND

insider trading with the executives that worked for nintendo when 64 came out

HA HA HA HA :D

I dout the PSP could handle steep parallax mapping. Even normal mapping would be costly. Luckly tho emboss bumpmapping is ungodly cheap, specialy on the psp since the video ram is really fast. A second surface render of a texture in vram would not be that costly.

Emboss bumpmapping is just a simple light calculation to the surface & 5-6 render passes.

Don't exspect high res bumpmaps tho. ;)
