The video game industry continues to receive no help from consumers, with June 2009 marking the fourth consecutive month in a row, year-to-year, that show a sales decline. According to the NPD, June saw the largest year-over-year monthly decline in sales since September 2000 when it hit 41%

As for the software side, Activision must be happy with the first month sales of Prototype as the game nearly sold 600K copies across all platforms. UFC, meanwhile, makes another return to the top of the list this month, beating out EA's debut of Fight Night Round 4 to take the number two spot.

Top 10 Total Hardware Sales

There isn't much to say about the hardware sales, other than they're pathetic.

1. Nintendo DS - 766.5K

2. Wii - 361.7K

3. Xbox 360 - 240.6K

4. PlayStation 3 - 164.7K

It's not all doom and gloom, however. NPD analsys claim that more gamers are playing games this year than last. "Our latest gamer segmentation study suggests that more than 4 million new 'players' have entered the games market since last year, so certainly the decline isn't due to less folks participating in the industry," the report says.
