View Full Version : I'm working with TMK's pspMAME....

MikeDX
April 24th, 2006, 13:33
Ok folks, here's the deal

I've taken TMK's pspmame, and i've started taking it to pieces. so far it runs the following games:

Pacman
Flicky
Track&Field
Galaxian

What I want to achieve with this is to release a version of MAME on the PSP with just the *cream* of old titles (roms not included)

So, let me know what games you want to see in there! I'm only going to include games that fall into bth of these categories:

1. They must run FULL SPEED (zero frameskip) on the psp
2. They must not have been released within the past 10 years.

Oh and it works great on 2.01 ;)

Mike

Thanks for the feedback everybody.

I will work my way through the list slowly and keep you informed on the progress. If possible, EVERY game in this thread will be tried and tested. If it works, it will make it in.

Once we have a list of say 50 or so games, I'll release it!

It runs very many games and is clear open source. At least the Cores could be useful to you.

Thanks for working on MAME :)

MikeDX
April 25th, 2006, 11:11
Ok, an update.

Games that work 100% so far:

Pacman
Galaxian
Track&Field
Flicky

Games that are too slow to be included or crash

The simpsons (out of memory)
TMNT - (out of memory)
Double Dragon 1+ 2 - 12fps! way too slow.

Once I have a nice base set of games, I'll work on some optimisations and possible working backwards to something similar to the gp2x version of mame which seems to have way less overheads. I already have some ideas for the interface.

Eggman has been testing my efforts, I'm 100% certain he can vouch for me :)

I've got a coy of TMK's excel spreadsheet which gives us some details about what does and does not run in his version of mame, and proceeding from there. Soon we will have a version of mame that supports a handful of nice games that run full speed or very near!

The bigger task for me is to move TMK's code to the newer pspsdk to take advantage of any newer features..

Ms Pac-man
Scramble
Amidar
Puckman
Galaxian
Track & Field

Wonder Boy
Arkanoid
Frogger

ALL of these games work great (including sounds) pac/ms pac have a minor issue causing them to run at 50fps instead of 61... strange

Hello,
It's nice to see someone working on a psp mame version finally!
Keep up the good work.
You didnt answer in the post regarding the use of http://www.talfi.net/gp32_franxis/
code usage. Can you use the code?Or you have to re-invent the wheel from the start again?
it would be ideal to have a punch start with that miracle code.
Some games i would like to see are the following:
City connection
Solomons key
Pengo
Wonderboy series
xained sleenna
Contra
Tehkan World Cup
The New Zealand Story
Toki
Cabal
Green Beret
Gals Panic
Pang
And of cource a dat file will be much apriciated so we can use it to get the full set for the psp from our current mame roms.
Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

Hi Mike,

I already posted which games I would like to see on your version of MAME in a different threat, but this one seems to be more active, so I'll post again.

1. CPS1 and CPS2 games (Final Fight, Ghouls and Ghosts, etc.)
2. Konami Games (Simpsons, TMNT, etc.)
3. System 16 Games (Outrun, Golden Axe, Altered Beast, etc.)

I noticed that you said The Simpsons ran out of memory, which I was expecting to hear. Since you are a programmer you are probably familiar with the Neo4All MVS program. This program allows massive NeoGeo games to be streamed through the DC's small ram by using a technique to pre-fetch the required data for the upcoming portion of the game on the fly. Apparently a similar version has already been released for the GPX. Do you think the inclusion of this system could help deal with larger games?

It seems that almost everyone here wants CPS1 and/or CPS2 emulation. If you are thinking about including this in your MAME have you thought about perhaps working from the Final Burn program? It runs both CPS1/2 and System 16 games, so you could kill two birds with one stone.

Like I said in my previous post, I would be in heaven if you were somehow able to emulate the games in my list, but in any case it's great to hear that someone is seriously taking up MAME again.

Good Luck

Yeah, I hope that Franxis port is able to provide you with some information. I checked out his page and his version of MAME for the GPX2 already supports over 1,000 games!

Good luck MikeDX!

@NovaKane - lmao. man i think we need to stop with the suggestions now. Moonwalker!??! :)

@oninotsume - MikeDX will probably get his own page here when he presents a proof of concept. so far we just have a long discussion with no end result. i know that eggman vouches for how cool it is but personally i want to actually have a go on my own psp. whilst i truly hope that this is all true, so far there have been no videos or even screenshots. also the MAME build currently supports several titles at playable levels - so why not release it? i dont understand... I agree that Cruising USA is just way beyond the realm of possibility. Perhaps that will have a better chance of working on Monkey's N64 emu?

Instead of Cruising USA how about Outrun? After all Cruising USA is just a rip off of Outrun when it comes down to it.

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed for CPS1 and System16 emulation. If CPS2 is ever possible then I'll welcome that as well :D

In any case simply to have someone dedicated to brining MAME to the PSP is just F'n awesome!

I did breeze through all the pages of this thread and didn't see it off hand, so I apologize if this had already been asked and I missed it.

Is it still going to use the .97 core?

No or Yes, is there a way to generate a DAT file for use with CLRMAMEPro from this actual PSP version?

I guess if not the .97 MAME windows version EXE could be used to build the DAT?

Thank you for undertaking this task of updating MAME for the PSP community too. Watching the GP version come out with new releases was making me green. I do some VB, Perl, and CGI programming and had once planned to attack MAME on the PSP, but found it way beyond my programming skills. I applaud your efforts. ;)

Hi B8a!

There are small bits of japanese text that need translating. I've managed to so about 50% of them so far but some are a little vague, and often these are source comments. I think I have found a way to use google translator to translate the text now though using UTF-8 converter.

But thanks for the offer!

I've just added 3 more games.

JailBreak
Green Beret
MatMania

We are now at a very cool point, where there are a handful of games that work extremely well (full speed) and we know there are lots of games that run on the same hardware that will also run, so we should get loads of new games added really quickly!

However, I wanted to know.

1. Is there a mame PSP wiki or something like that where we can look and see which games are compatible etc.?

2. I apologize if I've missed it, but I was wondering if you have made any announcements about your release plans? Meaning, what degree of compatibility are you aiming for (number of games, types of machines, etc.) before the release.

Eggman I would love to see some more videos :D

I made awesome progress on the 68k emulation, now we have 68000 and 68010 cores fully working.

Sadly until i rewrite the memory routines, CPS1 will not be running :( but Other 68000 games (such as atari tetris) work fine :)

I will use your icon. I'm not sure about the background!

It's early days yet. Sadly I don't have lots of time to spend on it but I'm hoping that once the memory management is fixed, and we use a proper video texture for the graphics, we could have an awesome copy of MAME running on the PSP, which i'm sure is what everybody wants!

Hi Mike,

I don't know if it will be of any use to you, but you might want to check out StrmnNrmn's new N64 emulator for the PSP. In the latest edition of Daedalus PSP (r3) he implemented the ability to load large games through data streaming.

I was totally blown away by this because it seems like one of the holy grails of PSP emulation, i.e. it would help MAME and NEOGEO, but maybe it's not exactly what I'm thinking it to be.

Anyway, just in case you hadn't seen it yet I thought it might help.

It's good to hear the 68K processors are on line :D
Good luck with the rest.

A little question about galaxian and moon cresta . In the previous pspmame of TMK was a sound-bug in these games.

Is fixed this bug ?
