lol one more question, i know its going to a file called....daedrom.tmp....lemme guess, if i try to reload it or something its gonna take the same amount of time?
maybe the author should release a simple program that can convert the N64 roms to "PSP Streamable Format" or whatever so that we wont have to wait unless we tried to load a non-converted file. i wouldnt mind sittin here converting my Roms to play.
Well a Z compressed file wouldn't be bad, as that supports decompression on the fly (PocketPC Playstation emu uses it). But if you can stand the extra space it takes, I'd just decompress them if I were you. Saves all that time.
I think that in future will be a easier way to load these roms... (maybe a windows conversor like you say!)

Great work, StrmnNrmn!
I'm looking forward to any upcoming releases.
I made a temporary background/icon for Daedalus...
and put it online for anyone who's interested... Feel free to use it.

lol i dont care about the space really, i just would MUCH rather have the emu load the roms faster...hate to say it but id much rather have the 8mb limit and have the roms load faster than sit for about 12 min to load a rom. just kinda irks me. lol.
not trying to be a bitch or anything just voiceing my opinion

Unzip your ROMs then. Should fix it right up unless there is a new bug in Daedalus.

well we wont be able to becayse we dont know the format that the emulator converts the files into. if we did then someone could write a program to do that. guess we will have to wait.
other than that small issue, its a great emu. there is someting about seeing Super Mario 64 or the Zelda logo (no matter HOW long it takes) on my PSP that just makes the entire time worth it.

May 3rd, 2006, 02:18
lol heh....i forgot to do that to the rom im loading now....stupid me....will do that next though and test the same games and see if unzipping them proves faster (me thinks it should, becayse then it wont have to decompress and THEN convert.
me thinks a PC converter for the roms however would still be a good idea.

PSP blows up after 5min of black screen with no ms light flashing, lol just kidding again, gona give up now, but someone else is welcome to try it too:)

Now that the emulaters are starting to form and working. what about controls? The N64 has more playing buttons than the psp.
I was thinking about this and got an idea for controls what they should do is have a universal control. (best for most games.) and then give the option to change the controls to suit the game because most games do not make full use of all the buttons. Just an idea. I think this would work very well to make all the controls work and comfortable.

Daedalus doesn't convert them into anything, it was just copying the files from the ZIPs to a temporary file so they wouldn't be stored in memory. Check the code if you wish, it's there :P

It's cool, glad to help out. And yeah, it seems to do things slower now, but at least you got a bit more speed out of it. I think cards with more free space work better, I've loaded 32MB ROMs from ZIP in like 5 minutes. But I have 700MB free.

You never use L on the N64 so that's just a waste of a PSP button. I say use this-
R, analog, start = same
Z=L
A=X

I immediatley downloaded.
I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but last I played Mario 64 at an average of
3-4 frames per second or so.
Kinda sad, but reading that people are getting almost 20, I'm amazed.
This is great, I love it.
Keep the awesome work up!

why does everyone keep saying that irshell makes daedelus run so much faster. buttom line irshell doesnt do $hit for it. Strmn said that the emu was hard coded at 333mhz. If it was at stock(222) we would get about 1 fps. So every stop being all like "omfg everyone should use irshell because it makes run so much faster". blah blah blah.

Without IR Shell I got in the mid-low 5's while dipping down to the high 4's while playing Mario in the castle courtyard. With Irshell I was able to hit the mid 6's while dipping to the high 5's. So it's about a 1.2 fps increase which isn't bad.

Bigmace, you say you get mario kart to work, you mean to the map selection, or in game playable racing?
Also the only reason I can think of for why anyone would get a faster fps using Irshell is the fact that daedalus' fps like almost every program, is always jumping around and is never constant , like i can look at it one second it will be 4.22 fps, and the next its at 5. I tried to use Irshell and saw no visible increase at all.
Cooe14
May 3rd, 2006, 22:47
It did help on R2 on R3 maybe it's dosen't.
And when using IR Shell the CPU speed resets to 222 everytime you exit out (go to XMB or turn it off) unless you save it 333 in the config section.

even if it did work i wouldnt really get to excited because mario64 is fine at low frames but ssb would be really annoying to play at 5 fps. I am pretty sure it will be working by the next release. I just hope Psmonkey can get his emu working and released soon though.

yes IRshell lets you pretend that the emulator has sound, but you need to put each track on loop so it fits in with the slooooooowwwww framerate
i wonder if it is possible to make a user mode version just for playing mp3 in the background or another multitasking program.

The fights between everybody is quite entertaining here, one person blurts about this, the other blurts about that. I mean, i could read the arguement between BigMace and Cooe14 for a little while. Shilo's quite amusing himself. But, seriously, there really is no need to fight over something about people believing about this or that. If you can't accept the fact that one person says something and rather you want to believe it or not. Don't just go and storm off and start bitching over it, you're not little kids anymore, so why don't all of you grow up.

Thats a pretty good idea but on top of those ideas why not give the option to change the controls to your liking because not all games make full use of the controls so games can be played with comfort then save that option for each game. so say if the game does not use the d-pad go to options controls and switch it to your liking to fit the psp and comfort when playing different games then save it and when u come back the controls for that individual game is set. I truly think this is the best way to go.
Flyingcow

I think the my idea for controls is the best way to go. So we should have a universal setting for all games. And then the option to make your own settings for each individual game so the controls will fit the individual game and then save the controls for that game. And each game can be set to make the psp comfortable and work great.

WISH TRIANGLE WASNT Z BUT R OR L TRY HOLDING TRIANGLE DOWN AND JUMPING WITH X in mario 64.....not real good feel for the Zbutton....
and in reference to the compiler....this was copyed from this thread STRNM SAYS:
<TABLE class=tborder cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" align=center border=0><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD class=alt1>
The code is almost a straight port of the PC code, so there's very little work done on optimising specifically for the PSP. It is running at 333 MHz. Currently I'm compiling with -O1, as -O2 seems to cause gcc to generate 'bad' code (i.e. it crashes on startup).
I'm doing software transforms + lighting, but all the rasterisation is handled by the psp hardware (there's probably quite a lot of work that can be done to optimise this).
I think the main speedup will come from sorting out the dynamic recompilation, but I need to free up another 3/4 MB of memory to get this working.
he said somthing like 60 fps after it works right!!!
omg huh???

Start=Start
R=R
L=Z

D-Pad=the two C buttons you are not using.

while we are on the topic of controls i just got a great idea for the default controls:
start = start (hardcoded)
menu = select (hardcoded)
analog = analog (hardcoded)
dpad = dpad
a = x
b = circle ( or square depending on what you prefir)
z = r trigger
c-pad = L trigger + x, circle, triangle, or square
L = square + L trigger
R = square + R trigger
of course this would cause conflicts with some games, but thats why you should be able to change the ones that arnt hard coded and saved like a game profile that is read each time you load the game.

Exactly my point Bigmace have the best default controls and then make an option to change the controls to your liking save it and the controls will fir the game and be comfortable because most games do not make full use of the controls.

PLUGINS
ok if you noticed when you boot your rom it says " initializing plug-in" if you have had the chance to play PJ64 PC EMULATOR you are prob. familiar with " PLUGINS"....the pj64 uses different plugins to run different games BETTER...these plugins ( created by old school coders of the 64 such as zilmer and jabo!)make the emulator change compatability, sound, and graphics ....plugins are a big part of how WELL your pc 64 will run...and how fast....and with what games....
QUESTION? how do plugins effect this psp version of a pc ported 64 emulator...will it have a plug-in folder for gfx? or is this even relevent to the psp project IM VERY INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT PSMONKEY OR STRNM HAVE TO SAY ON THE PLUGIN TOPIC!!
and if the psp required the creation of a new plugin...... or a ported one from a pc emulator... if it was a ported plugin WOULD A NATIVE PSP TYPE PLUGIN SERVE THE PSP EMULATOR??
thanx for your answers in advance hope you get to this!!!

DYNREC: OFF
i noticed that when booting it also says DYNREC:OFF implying that there a dynamic recompiler in the works ....id say when the dynamic recompilers bugz are all worked out you will see a much faster much smoother n64 emulator on our psp .....boot up a rom and pay close attention to the boot sequence....
ONE GR8 THING ABOUT THIS BEING A PORT is the fact that it MIGHT use a pc video plug-in ( a plugin that was made before the psp project for the pc) and if that is the case they can make a psycho fast plugin...and wont have any problems with the video...it all boils down to a WELL POLISHED DYNAMIC RECOMPILER.....MAYBE VS R4..........and that could take some time.......they are just as exited to have you test new builds as we are to get them..;) ...so when the emu gets better we will know...:cool: .but lets be patient and not nag about the next release..

hey strmnrm when do you hope to release next release :confused:
Sometime this weekend hopefully. I fixed a problem on Wednesday night that was causing significant problems with a number of roms. The end result is that a lots of roms are running for longer without crashing now.
I've also been spending some time writing a display list debugger which has been helping me fix various graphical glitches (notably Mario's head is now coloured correctly in the Mario64 intro :) ).
Anyway I want to spend a bit more time fixing a few more issues I know about. In the meantime I've attached a few screenshots as a bit of a tease :)

I wouldn't infer too much from the debug console output :) A lot of that text is just spewed out because it's present in the PC build - many of the subsystems (such as the dynarec) are stubbed out in the PSP version just so they compile.
Having said all that, dynarec is the main feature that I want to implement (it should be a lot easier to handle now that I've freed up a load of memory by streaming the roms in dynamically).

ok quick question, i got got R3 and i was loading Dr.Mario64 and the emulator was like "rom is compressed and byteswapped | Decompressing rom to daedrom.tmp" and started some conversion process...has this happened to anyone else?
There have been a few comments about this, so I thought I'd give you all some more information so you can see what's going on.
When I initially wrote the rom streaming code (on Tuesday sometime) I set the code up to pull chunks of the rom from the .zip file directly whenever the emulator needed to access them.
The problem with zip files is that it's very expensive to seek 'backwards' in the file (i.e. it's fine to go from chunk 30 to 38 to 50, but it's expensive to go from 30 to 28 to 15).
I reduced this cost by caching as much of the rom as I could (at the moment I cache 128 chunks of 16KB, i.e. 2MB of the rom), but unfortunately it seems that most roms seek in a fairly random fashion and the emulator was spending most of its time just seeking backwards in the .zip file.
The solution I came up with for this problem is to decompress the rom when the emulator boots up. I can seek very rapidly backwards and forwards in an uncompressed rom, so everything runs at almost full-speed. Of course the big problem with this approach is that you need to have 30-40MB of storage free on your memory stick to decompress the rom to.
If you're really short of space on your memory stick, I'd suggest just sticking one *uncompressed* rom in the Roms directory, and replacing it whenever you want to play something else.
One thing to note is that the emulator will still try to create a copy of the rom if the data is byteswapped. There are probably tools out there that will byteswap your roms into the format Daedalus needs, but I'm planning on dropping this restriction in the next release so you may just want to wait around for that.

StrmnNrmn
May 5th, 2006, 23:38
I was going to wait until tomorrow, but I thought I'd release this now and have a bit of a lie in tomorrow morning :)
[!] Disable PSP FPU exceptions, enabling many more roms to run.
[!] Fixed ambient lighting bug.
[!] Fixed scissoring.
[~] Only create temp rom file if compressed (not swapped).
[~] Fixed decaling offset.
[~] Lots of combiner additions/fixes.
It's quite a short list, but hopefully people will find some significant improvements in compatibility. I haven't looked at improving performance yet - that's probably the next area I'll focus on.
Enjoy!
Downloads attached :)

Don't get your hopes up too much just yet - Zelda runs around 3fps at the moment :(
I'm not sure if Paper Mario is getting any further, but I did implement a few new combiners for it.

3fps is good enough for me on Zelda:D Gona download R4 and see what Paper Mario does:D I'm so happy:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
BTW flippkidd69.............. I'M THE ULITMATE PAPER MARIO NUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is the reason that my web site for my Flash Movies and games is based around Paper Mario. It is still under construction, but it is still worth a look:D

Mario 64 is running at a little over 5 fps. BTW Strmnrmn i wanted to thank you for the time and effort you have put into this emu aloung with psmonkey you guys are the best.
Oh and when is sound going to be put in? I know i am getting a little ahead of the game but i was just wondering.

I tried Paper Mario, and it still hangs in the same spot. When you try to start the game, it askes you to make a save file, when I do it says "PI: Copying 128 byes of data from 0x000dacc to 0x08000000. The intro looks better, and the stage is no longer pink:D Now, I gota try out Zelda:D
EDIT: Is the screen shot thing still broke? Cuz I was watching the intro on Zelda, and sometimes the words were garbled, I thought it is funny and wanted to post a screen shot of it. I did, and it froze, and it didn't take the screen shot :( .

I'm not sure to be honest. I personally don't think it's worth putting sound in until the framerate is a lot higher (any sounds you did hear at the current framerate would be as choppy as hell).
I also think savegame support is a higher priority. Maybe I should put a poll up sometime :)

When I get a chance I'll run it under the PC version and see if it gets any further.

Well on tell then i guess i could use ir shell for sound lol. and smash bros. looks better but still has some problems. oh and i agree that sound should be put in last and save states would be better.
oh and why do we need 30 to 40 mb of free space? i think you said for compressed roms right.

Hope you can get it worked out StrmnNrmn!:D I really wana play Paper Mario on my PSP:D:D:D:D Playing Super Mario 64 should hold me out till you can fix it (I hope you can).
BTW I just tried out Quest 64, and you can read text in game!!!! But some rooms are still nothing but pink and black lines running down the screen, and you cant see anything. I'm gona play it on PJ64 and see if I can use that to guide my self on Daeduals.
Edit: My little PJ 64 trick worked, but I got lost in the castle and gave up:( (couldn't even do it on PJ 64).

May 6th, 2006, 02:20
Just a note if your roms are uncompressed there is very quick loading times. If your roms is compressed you need to have 30 to 40 mb free because of the process of uncompression and needs a temporary copy of the umcompressed version plus the fact that the loading times take way longer.
