A Analog Stick (joy stick) allows for analog control which means that the harder you push on it the faster you go and the softer you push on it the slower it will go also it allows for full 360 degree movenment. A Digital Pad (D-pad) has digital control which basically means it has one speed, also they usually don't have full 360 degree movement due to the fact that they are usually done in a cross which allows for 4 directions of movement plus that you can hold 2 of them down to do diagonals so you get a total of 8 directions of movement.
