The video above was recorder in Spring of 2008. That’s a lot of time for improvement with a technology like this.

At GDC 2008 Israeli Developer 3DV Systems demonstrated it’s new ZCam camera which acts like a PlayStation Eye Toy that measures 3D space. IGN’s Nintendo Editor Matt Casamassina was so impressed with the technology that he said, “It out Wiis, Wii.” He then went on to speculate that the next Wii would probably have a similar control scheme or one of the other companies (Microsoft or Sony) might adapt it to their own consoles.

Well, Matt, you’ve out Pachtered (http://stars.ign.com/objects/001/001067.html), Pachter (http://www.examiner.com/x-14920-Sacramento-Gaming-Industry-Examiner~y2009m6d30-Analyst-Michael-Pachter-predicts-PS3-will-overtake-Xbox-360). Although Microsoft’s Project Natal is based on technologies developed in-house, last Spring Microsoft purchased 3DV Systems (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124215416209111679.html), makers of the ZCam seen in the video above, to presumably avoid any patent disputes, improve their own technology and corner the market to prevent Nintendo and Sony from swooping down and buying 3DV Systems to develop a similar product.

With all this in mind, it looks like Project Natal is more accurate than most originally believed. Are there any Project Natal skeptics whose minds have been changed after seeing this video? Do you think Project Natal may be more sensitive than you originally thought? Let us know in the comments!

Interesting stuff, I remember hearing a lot of skepticism about how accurate Natal really was, especially after "BAM! There it is".

Microsoft also just lifted the 720p(?) restriction, so now games can be made on the Xbox 360 that don't need to have HD graphics...I wonder if they are hoping for some Wii-360 multiplats in the future with this? Or maybe just to take the strain off of developer's budgets for game making this gen?

I wonder this, I wonder that, I wonder.
