The Dahlia Border in the Arboretum is planted with over 1500 Dahlias with around 300 different varities.

They vary in height from 2ft to 6ft and every colour you could imagine and every different type of Dahlia also.

When i was a child the Dahlia Border was in the Guiness Book of Records for being the longest flower border in the UK at least.

Because the council are into saving money where they can we now leave the dahlias in through the winter and we mulch them with around 4 inches of chippings that we get from our own tree department. The savings from a money point of view and also the amount of work saved is immense.

At the moment we are still replanting around 50% of the original number allocated for the bed but that should reduce to around 33% in time.

Heres some photos took today (September 2009)
