and good news on the MIDI, now you can make some more music! :p

Hi all,

I'm finally back from my trip. Chicago was great. I'll be working on the engine test build this week (with cameras and pre-rendered backgrounds), and next week I'll get the collision mesh working.

Gotta add sound at some point too.

July 20th, 2006, 16:14
glad you had a good time
ive done a quick demo of the track im working on, it is very very rough, i just wanted to give everyone a taster
heres the link
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=3P6MX77J

should work, i tested myself, i thought id use mega upload to save the site some space.

i was thinking it could also work as a menu theme instead...

jman420
July 20th, 2006, 18:48
any chance you could upload that song to DCEmu rather then megaupload?

Accordion
July 20th, 2006, 18:51
how come?

i just thought keep it external as it is a very early test

oh what the hell here it is

remember i ve just started today , so its rough like... erm, rough like a shark, or sand, or ...or a council estate 12 year old mother of five ...erm yeah

hmm nine posts away from evil
ahhhhh

jman420
July 20th, 2006, 19:50
hmm.... any chance you could make it more musical? or is that the way it is :P

Dont take that the wrong way, but the piano just sounds kind of spratic, and 53 seconds in, ya just start hitting whatever keys ya want! lol...

I look forward to hearing this progress though :D

Accordion
July 20th, 2006, 20:52
dont worry your right, like i said, rough

yes the ending is mad, i was struggling to make any progress so i just kept playing a bit to reach an end

the main problem is timing, i recorded the bass and melody separate to make certain it was smooth as possible but the timing is off for most of it.
i like the waltz theme(i always like waltz music though) and it does work well when the last two chords of bass in each bar meet the melody but bacause of the timing it doesnt happen all the time.

also the first two notes are completley out of time...not that it is a good start anyway, i really need an into for about four bars to begin.

what do you mean exactly by more musical?
more elements maybe ?

HardHat
July 21st, 2006, 02:07
Well, I think it is a good start accordian boy.

I like the first 20 seconds the best. But the melody line in the last 2/3 doesn't feel like it is reusing the musical ideas introduced near the beginning. And near the end there seem to be some wrong notes in the melody line.

The bass line seems fine to me on first hearing.

Basically the piece would be better if it were a little tighter. And it needs more violins. :-)

Kaiser
July 21st, 2006, 05:58
And it needs more violins. :-)

Violins and theme music hmm?

This is one of the Resident Evil series greatest themes (from the outbreak games). Perhaps it could give you guys some inspiration.

Edit: I added a second track if you need inspiration for the RPD. Its a remix of the original RE2 RPD theme found in the "Desperate Times" scenario of Outbreak file #2. The outbreak games have amazing remixed RE2 music. You should also track down the Lab remix found in Outbreak #1. Its a good listen as well.

Accordion
July 21st, 2006, 16:38
in my most evil post ever, full of bad omens and what not (666th post OOOHHHH)

well kaiser, funny you should mention the outbreak main theme, as that was my main inspiration. have another listen, it is quite different, but all the notes are there (transposed or not) i changed it to a waltz due to not wanting to copy it too much.
ive played that bass line so often ill never forget it .

pay no attention to the end, i was messing around. and getting frustrated by no progress!

maybe sunday for a clean version, im going backpacking in september so im working nearly everyday to make some money, 5am to 3pm, on monday, wednesday, friday, and saturday...horrendous!
in the mean time :
i would gladly take any requests for extra elements or voice changes.
more violins noted !

Well, I finally got some debugging done. I'm now loading the cameras successfully, and the displaying the backgrounds correctly. I don't yet use the camera, but that'll come soon. I've made a build to show off my modest progress. I'm sending it to the team, but I'm posting some screen shots too.

Looks brilliant :D :D :D

Keep it up. those textures are out of this world

jman420
July 23rd, 2006, 22:15
thanks rhebock, yeah its accualy not rendering the character on the plane of the camera yet, its just rendering on a plane from that aspect.. soon enough it will render the characters on the exact plane used in the game :D

and Zion, thanks for the sarcasim about the textures, but thats just the way it is untill the artist that created the main hall finishes his model. then I will begin on texturing the whole room..

Edit: Kick more ass! even better user status :D thanks!

nice work but in picture #2 the character seems to be over sized : D

Actually taking a look of the character, it is sized fine, picture her in picture 2 going to sit down on the PC seat and you can see she aint all that big, just the graphic I guess (And thats brilliant :D)

Loving the work Jman, I hope you have thought of using this new 3D engine everybody has been talking about :D or not haha if not no worries this end I think its great already :D

Sumo X
July 24th, 2006, 02:48
Looks really good.

I need to get back to music production, though. Although I think I'm going to look into getting sound effects like footsteps and gun sounds (I may just look for public domain versions) and have them ready to be used as well. They're little things that no ones discussed but really would round out a demo nicely.

jman420
July 24th, 2006, 02:55
right, I agree. we do sound effects. :D

I'll PM you the download link for the build I made screenshots from.

July 24th, 2006, 20:37
hello again,
erm sorry but more time is needed for the waltz, i went out saturday and drank way too much(i dont know how i got home at all) i just tried the test build, its great!
one question, are the renders going to need to be layered to produce images in front of the character, or is there a better way?
anyway great progress, glad sumo x is back doing sound, nice to see all the enthusiasm for the project as well.

jman420
July 25th, 2006, 05:10
yes what I hope to do is have 2 images to display as the game view, one, a background with all detail, and a rendered alpha image (so that only what I want is visible) to be displayer over top of the character.

Accordion
July 25th, 2006, 11:34
how easy would it be to render for stereoscopic viewing, im guessing you just need to render the scene from a certain distance away and have each view take up half the screen, be good to try it
maybe

jman420
July 25th, 2006, 17:52
well stereoscopic uses 2 images from different aspects to trick your eyes into seeing 3D, so the issue would be finding the exact aspect that would make it look right.. it would be possible though.. Why? I'm not making a virtual boy homebrwe :p

Accordion
July 25th, 2006, 19:13
it would give everyone who bought MGA2 something to do with the solid eye(me included)

thereisnt any real need, but maybe once the main game is done...

i think each camera must be the distance between the centres of each of your eyes, the average is 2.5 inches i think....

HardHat
July 26th, 2006, 06:17
If you place the stereo images closer together the objects seem closer, farther apart to make the objects seem farther away. Easily enough done. But potientially lots of work but would be fun to try.

I haven't bought MGA2 yet, but I'd like to try it when I buy my next round of PSP games.

jman420
July 26th, 2006, 07:16
that would be an interesting prospect for a real time 3D rendered scene, I havent bought MGA2 either, but it would be cool as long as the solid eye viewer is comfortable I think I might get one to test out that ability though.. if it wasnt to hard to add, that could make a great other version of the game lol

NoQuarter
July 26th, 2006, 09:31
Much better to make your own solid eye viewer it's not that hard-my plan is for a head mounted unit using a small welding mask resembling lab goggles.Anyway great project jman,I'm learning a bit about rendering with blender and plan to do the steroscopic thing with it;)The fake nintendo ON video is awesome in 3D.Check out my thread" VR and the psp "in the forums It would be great to see this project in stereo.

Progress update:

Well I've got the collision importer coded up finally. I passed the smoke test (doesn't crash on start up now), so I need to unit test it, to verify correctness. Once that is fully debugged, I'll move on to doing actual collision detection code. Maybe I'll have news end of day tomorrow.

Metitzo sent me the renders for the 11 finished camera angles for the main room of the PD. JMan is working on the same for the library for me. We are still negotiating the best way to make an MD3 animation of a door opening, but I can always convert a 3DS in Blender or Milkshape3D, I guess. I just downloaded the 30 day trial of 3DSMax 8. It probably isn't much different from 3.1 which is the version I use at home.

Briggzy11
July 28th, 2006, 03:52
I have studied all of the resident evil games since I have seen this thread appear and I have to say you are doing it a similar way the original Resident Evil was first produced (In other words "Good" :D), However from what it sounds like, this game might have quite a big file size? Either way carry on with the work you are all making fantastic progress :)

Wat programs r u guys using for the 3D cuz it look really good.

Keep it up guys:D

jman420
August 3rd, 2006, 05:18
thanks rehbock, and Roxas we are both of us using 3D Studio Max, basicly the best 3D CAD software that exists for multimedia :D

and just as a progress update, I dont see any way that I will have any part of this game done any time soon, and therefor the game WILL NOT BE RELEASED untill I can contribute to it.. I currently have no internet at my house, so I have to wait untill I get it back again.. Hardhat, if you read this, I ask that you do not release anything, and I will get back to you when I can...

The project hasnt ended yet. But it wont be done for a while...

well thanks accordian, I got my internet hooked back up (DAMN COMCAST!) so now I can work on stuff once again, but I lost a bit of work when I restored my laptop (thinking that I had saved onto a memorycard) so I have a few hours of work to do once again... but I'll try to get it done soon

and well, I never got a chance to play killer 7, so I wouldnt know how to remake it... and I beleave that I will be permenently busy going to school, work, and working on GSHC :D so I realy wont have time...

HardHat
August 10th, 2006, 20:34
Well, I have the cameras matching more closely to the scenes. They aren't right still, and the collision mesh need more help. Still it is getting better. These include updated rendered bgs.

Now the main character stays on screen all the time. I still need to refine my camera selection rule though.

jman420
August 12th, 2006, 04:45

And on another note! I have realized that I never did give due credit to Meyitzo, the artist for the main hall.. He did the modeling, not me.. But! on the same subject, I have finished a basic model for the library and rendered an image of it that I would like to show..

It doesent yet have doors, or the bottom floor lighting, or the books on the shelves of the bookcases, and a few of the textures need fixed, but its just about done. :D

And on another note, not a lot has been completed so far, I have the library, but have not started anything new yet untill I have a working build of the game to test aspect, and I havent been able to contact Hardhat in a few days..

wow, quite the vocabulary :D

anyway! missed the contests, doesent matter, I dont need any prize for making a game... making it is prize enough...

and on another note, I have talked it over with Hardhat and Meyitzo, I have decided to make the game full time 3D, with a behind the player camera angle, aswell as the security camera viewpoints if possible.. we decided it was to much work to build the game based on 2D backgrounds with strange camera angles...

so the game will now be somewhat thrown into being more modern, which will also hopefully add to the entertainment of walking around the old levels in full time 3D..

demo should be released within a month hopefully...

that would be alright Accordian :D

and its not intirely a "lazy" idea, accualy the whole thing requires me to change my model from 1 million polygons to 10k... so by no means is it easier, because I already have the model for the 2D version....

but we are going to continue testing other ways of setting it up to work.. I'd still like to use the pre-rendered backgrounds because then I have reign over lighting...

Think you guys would have a possible demo ready by the end of our Dream On contest? :)

It has some great prizes

Accordion
September 13th, 2006, 19:54
i think that will be the target, though work is going slowly due to personnel matters for each of us, im starting uni in a week, so im really pushing to get another 2/3 songs done before then.
not that its up to me but i think it will be released into the compo, and then updated when possible. the move to full 3d will definately lengthen the process though…

jman420
September 14th, 2006, 02:55
well its going great.. havent gotten a lot done lately (I started college 2 weeks ago) so only a few levels have been built..

but we are working on it, when I get a chance I'm usualy working on modeling..

as for the comp, its possible that I will throw it in there, but I'm not sure yet.. we dont have a working beta yet, so its possible that we wont have a fully functional demo by the time it needs to be submitted.

well, I dont beleave that this will compable, all the compititions that have ever seen have said that you cant enter clones, or remakes... so I dont know...

but I did want to say,

it doesent look like the psx emulator can play RE2, so my project will still be the only working psp survival horror game for a while lol... even though its not quite ready to be released :p

HardHat
September 25th, 2006, 17:44
Well, I'll be working on a new (internal to the team) build in the next few days. This version will add the level that JMan created, support for OGG and WAV sounds (as discussed earlier). Collision detection is on my list, but I suspect it won't be ready yet. Also lighting is high on my todo list, but I'm not sure when it'll be ready. Hopefully I'll have screen shots to share when I get it ready. It will support MJPEG video playback, but I don't have the door opening sequence yet as an MJPEG.

I think that having a playable version of the game for the DCEmu compo will depend on a lot of things. But it is still far off, so there is lots of chances to get it out between now and then.

Entering GSHC1 is perfectly legitimate in all the compos I've looked at since we're using original: music, graphics, code, names. That means it is an original work. Clones are okay. What you're not allow to do is rip sprites, music, or unlicenced code from commercial games. Also trademark infringement can be a problem.

Hey
Yes Jman, we're just like you, so now for the first time ive read the front page:)
You write that you will try to get the "over the shoulder" cam at some point. Will that mean that there will only be that, couse I think that it was the biggest bummer the RE serie ever made. I liked the "Securety cam" style a lot more, mostly becouse you can se who's behind you:P Just dosn't hope that it will remove the security cams when you impliment it:D
Anyway, I think it is one of the nicest projects ever made, and i'm glad that even after such a long time, the team is still together and still working on it:P

Its been going great, sorry about the lack of posts lately, I havent been able to get to much done. (mid-term time) but! I have been able to get another level completed, just waiting now on a demo from Hardhat..

also have composer (above) as the newest (likely named) composer for music on the project, and his work realy does have the same style as RE2 from the standpoint of musical quality..

I think that the project may have a few playable levels by the end of the year (I hope anyway) so, untill then, I suppose I will continue posting updates when I get them..

also on another note, I have started animating the teaser video I eluded to way back when I started the project.. I hope to at least have that done by the end of the year :D

thanks for checking up on the thread, an to all that do check up, I am greatful for your intrest..

sorry I havent gotten much done, but college has realy put a dent in my 3D work this fall...

but yes, I'm still working on some stuff, just not getting posts on here much :p

well hey nice sig, hopefully you aren't one of those 2% :p

but anyway!
we hope to get a demo out within a few months, I dont know when we will be able to get one, but I hope for the next few months...

we're working on making it such a large game, (about 4 hours in length) that it could take a while for all the system to be set up for the ammount of levels I want to have, but I will definately keep posting updates when we get them...

December 22nd, 2006, 18:59
lol what happend?? we're still making it, the only thing is, our main coder has been trying to help the second coder set up an environment, but it seems to not be going very well... and then on top of that, I dont think that much has been done for the playability of the game... also, I havent been on MSN in the last week so I dunno whats going on with the other people realy...

but I've been working on more 3D models, I've gotten another person to work on a level for me, he should be done by now I think... but I dont know

I'll post an image of the new level when I get the file from our other 3D artist..

anyway, thanks for the intrest, sry I havent posted in a while, havent had a lot to say.. plus I just got done with my fall semester of college, so I havent had a lot of time to work on the project here...

just to let anyone interested know, i have resigned from making music for the game, my interest in producing music has almost gone, and i hadnt done any work for this project in so long. i thought it unfair to leave people thinking i was still producing . i just hit a wall, and it made me turn around!

using garageband never helped though.

im still lookin forward to this projects arrival on our psps however, even if we all have RE2 on our psp now anyway...

Anyway! I have no idea, I know that accordianboy quit working with me on the project to work on school and his own stuff, so I think it was somthing like that being said....

ANYWAY! I havent seen anyone post on this thread in a long ass time, so I havent kept people informed, I finaly got the main hall done I think.. its re-textured, and lit, now all I need is for the people coding on the project to get off their asses and program somthing... (or I need new people to be working on the project...)

yeah it does, I hope your not being sarcastic.. its not like a photograph or anything, as I dont believe that the P.D. from Resident Evil 2 was based on a real place.. but anyway, yeah that was the model by Meyitzo, I just re-textured it and lit it properly again...

well, while back to school, I havent been able to work on the game much, but it seems futile anyway... I was working with Hardhat, but as far as I know, he isnt working on the game at all... I am just posting so as to request more assistance.

I would like to put a call out to all programmers, I need your help! I would like to work on this game farther, but as of now, I'm basicly the only person working on it. There is the script writer working with me on the game script, but nobody working on programming. I would still like to have someone to help...

and if any mods see this, please throw this on the front page... it would be nice lol...

so if anyone is interested, please PM me, or email me at [email protected]...

I have some great news! I am once again going to be working on the project. I hope to have a demo-beta done soon. I have another programmer. The infamous Zion has joined the team as a coder. We're going to be working on finishing the Police Department, at least for the demo. From there, we will be working on the outside of the police department, as a continuation of the game. I am very excited, as should be the intire PSP homebrew scene...

Thanks to Zion for joining, and thanks to all those who have kept this project going thus far.

And of course, thanks to the fans of the project. There has been 38 pages of great feedback and props.. Thanks all

February 13th, 2007, 04:27
hey Yaustar... Yeah, it was just Hardhat, aswell as another person that contacted me via Email, by the alias of Fox68k... But he did not want to work with 3D, so he left. And Hardhat moved on to other projects, so I got the source from him (from our last alpha test) and now, Zion and I are going to work on it.

I'm also going to get Visual Studio.net 2005 Profesional, so I can work on the project aswell...

So it will now be me, and Zion as coders...

And yeah, the project was abandoned for a while, but I have decided to start working on it again, just because now I have someone else to help me with it :D

oh that sucks its a clone, cause i can't do anything but create concepts and stuff otherwise i'd ask to help but still pretty cool what you're doing though

jman420
March 14th, 2007, 18:40
it's not a clone, its more or less an adaptation of Resident Evil 2, and 3, with a lot of original levels, and story.. The only things that I'm using from RE2 are the Police Department, and the underground Labrotory. Other then that, everything is new, and original. if you work on 2D concept art, we desprately need some concept art, simply because of that reason. We need ideas for levels other then the one's we are using from the original games.
Neway, IM me on MSN or Yahoo, I have my accounts on the left. (under my name and pic)

Hey, yeah absolutely, we're working hard on the system for gameplay and graphics. Its still nowhere near the point of release, but I'm working on quite a few things for graphics. (Generaly in my english class lol)

Anyway, we've got a great writer for the game. I just got the intire pre-game sequence story line, so I've been working on the CGI for the opening movie. Quite a few other 3D work has been done for the game, I'm nearly finished with the outside of the P.D. which is where the player will start after the CGI movie is played (at the beginning of the game). So we're not quitting, and not giving up, its just taking quite a bit longer than expected due to programming being so damn hard lol...

Neway, thanks guys for the support. We're still 'a truckin' on the project :D

I am working on this project more than ever now, I bought RE:UC for Wii yesterday, and it DOES NOT HAVE ANY RE2 LEVELS?!?! But in any case, since Capcom won't release an updated version of RE2 at all, I'll continue working on mine lol. When I heard that Capcom was going to make an updated version of RE 0 - 3, I thought I should quit screwing around making my own game. Honestly, I would have to say that it is. I've never met another programmer interested in coding the game from the ground up.

Using a system as simple as 2d backgrounds and 3d foreground characters I still want to develop a single floor single level, but am unaware of any simple ways of programming and/or creating (using a GUI based program), this game.

I am still looking for anyone interested in taking on this project, but I wonder if Hardhat, and Meyitzo are still interested in developing further this project. So all out, who still have to look at my sticky after 6 years, lol, so,
speak now or forever hold delete.
