View Full Version : Is Apple Killing Nintendo?

Despite a resurgence in popularity born of the release of Nintendo's Wii, the venerable Japanese video game maker is taking an earnings beatdown. And most blame Apple as the likely culprit.

This week, Nintendo revealed that its fiscal-first-half net profit plummeted better than 50% and added that things are bound to get worse before they get better. As reported by MacDailyNews, Nintendo "faces growing competition in the hand-held market from Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPod touch and their growing lineup of games," writes Kenneth Maxwell of the Wall Street Journal.

Quote:
"Nintendo on Thursday said it will introduce a new version of its popular DS hand-held, the Nintendo DSi LL, that comes with a larger 4.2-inch screen that allows users to surf the Web and will encourage them to use the device as a music player. The current DSi has a 3.25-inch screen. The company said it will go on sale in Japan on Nov. 21, though it did not announce any immediate plans to sell the new device outside of Japan."

Although no one is saying that Nintendo is dead in the water, Apple has certainly made it difficult for Nintendo to stay afloat. And if the rumors that Apple Insider reports prove to be true, Nintendo may have more of an uphill fight than most realize.

Quote:
As Apple continues to gain ground in the portable gaming space, the Wall Street Journal also suggested that the Cupertino, Calif., company could enter the console business and compete with the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony Playstation 3. While that rumor has persisted for years, it has yet to prove accurate.

Although the news this week seems to suggest that Apple is squaring off against Nintendo, the truth, however, probably lies in the growing battle between Apple and Microsoft. If Apple does, indeed, introduce their own gaming console, its likely that such a development would be intended to do battle with the XBox 360 and Sony's Playstation 3. Although Nintendo would still face added competition from such a venture by Apple, it's safe to assume that Nintendo would not be target #1 for Apple.

Quote:
Apple also boasted in September that, at that moment, the iPhone OS had 21,179 game and entertainment titles available, compared to 3,680 for the Nintendo DS and 607 for the Sony PSP. One of the strengths of the iPhone and iPod touch is the number of budget-priced titles available for the platform. Comparatively, most games for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP cost between $25 and $40.

I still don't think of the iPhone as a gaming handheld.

It's more of a cellphone with some games. :P

What about the iTouch?

They're the same damn thing, give the Itouch buttons and a few analog sticks and shoulder buttons, then you have a gaming handheld. Otherwise you just have a touchscreen capable of emitting music that sounds like it came straight out of a tin can.

these aren't games dammit, and apple is a phone not a game system.

No it's barley a phone that's why there are more worthless apps than anything, and apple is just desperate for attention that's why they seem to think cellphone games are anything near real games.

The iphone/ipod touch as a games machine is frankly rubbish, i think in time the apps thing will pass and people will move on.
Nintendo need to release some good games again though as it does seem that they have been taking a back seat latley.
Bring on Wii Pilotwings, F-Zero and how about using some of that head tracking 3d stuff that that guy hacked together the other year.

Iphone is rubbish for games but people increasingly expect their phone to replace every other gadget, so unless Sony and Nintendo do their own phone Apple will definately eat away at their market share.

Im glad this is happening, all Ninty fans read and weep, Nintendo needs a kick in the backside for the poor effort they are making with their consoles and handhelds alike, they have so much money they could hire more development staff, and/or buyout more developers to make games that old Ninty fans such as myself want and not the garbage they are constanly pumping out

Its good software the consoles need, not extra variations of the same pile of crap, that doesnt do anything but collect dust because the next big title is 2 months till release.

They also need to get rid of that Miymoto, hes long past his prime, seeing that he was the main man behind Nintendogs and Wii Music it seems that his ageing is affecting the way he thinks the younger generation gamers want to play, I want to beat things with a stick like in Zelda not pick up dog waste.

Look at the SNES amazing games, it was the PS2 of the era, N64 they lost exclusives because they didnt put their foot down, they even sold their best asset RARE, with the gamecube well from the way i was looking, Nintendo was a goner and all these folks who bought a Wii and are dissapointed (and there are many) will not make the same mistake twice with their consoles.

Breaths Out... woooooo

And now their Handhelds are going the same way

Lol, this is just Apple doing some big talk paying some site to say things like this.

Look at the Wii sales. Apple can only dream of something like that.
