Moonlight (http://mdxonline.dyndns.org/archives/nds/) has updated moonshell.

Moonshell is a multimedia player for the Nintendo DS. It can play wav, mp3, ogg, display text files, display jpg, bmp and play video.

Whats new:

The FAT driver for Max Media CF was added. (Unconfirmed)
Custom kit for clock plug-in was added.

Moonshell sounds great (literally) but ....
GBAMP lets you play a tune and read some lyrics while
it plays. Does Moonshell do this yet? Is it planned? I'm trying to turn a DS into a neat MP3 player for my
nephews with a GBAMP-$25, 512M SD-$15, & Datel Max Media Player-$20 (in transit now). I want to avoid
converting to gbs.

Argh, okay anyone know what video files moonshell will play? I have tried .avi .mpeg and .wmv and it wont play any. What codecs does it play? I found the authors website but alas it was in japanese. Any help, or suggestions for aps that will play a large selection of video files with little muss or fuss?

1st of all, get SuperCard/M3 for MUCH better features and possibilities(games namely). Moonshell lets you listen, read, and look at the same time, so you can read lyrics and look at pic while you listen to stuff. GBAMP is pretty bad IMO and Datel's MML does NOT work with it.
