What racing games, arcade & console, would you say were the great games prior to Gran Turismo? Pole Position and Bump N' Jump are pretty legendary.

Pole Position was pretty cool. I remember seeing one in a Pontins holiday place when I was a kid. Needless to say I crashed a lot and stopped putting my pocket money in it. Perversely, in went into a Ghost and Goblins machine instead which was also stupidly hard for me.

Outrun for sure, especially the Arcade cabinet on hydraulics :)
Maybe Hang On as well.

SNES Mario Kart was pretty awesome too. I also used to like Turbo Lotus Esprit and Stunt Car Racer on the Amiga.

There's also the top down type ones like Super Sprint, Super Off Road and Super Cars 2 (which I really liked). The titles say it all as they were, er, super :)

Funny you should mention Ghost & Goblins, I just saw that retro reviewed and they commented it was very hard too.

Super Sprint started out as the black & white 1974 Atari arcade game Gran Trak 10, and eventually got more sophisticated in color and ended up as one of the most popular games on NES. They were simpler times, they were better times. Lol.

I had Pole Position for the 2600 and Pole Position II included on one of those joysticks with built-in arcade classics. They were both enjoyable games.

The Mario Kart series and Excitebike are enjoyable as well.

Outrun for SEGA consoles.

Rad Racer for the NES, then TopGear on the SNES.

Daytona on the SEGA Saturn, alongside SEGA Rally.

Then we've touched the Gran Turismo area, which I do believe Ridge Racer pre-dates.
