StrmnNrmn (http://strmnnrmn.blogspot.com/2006/06/daedalus-psp-r5.html) has released the official Daedalus R5 only a few minutes ago. This great N64 emulator just keeps getting better.

Here's whats new
[+] New DynaRec engine, resulting in significant performance improvements
[+] New front end - ability to toggle a couple of options (more to come)
[+] Save game first pass (eeprom4k, eeprom16k and mempak)
[^] Various interpreting engine optimisations
[~] Use .png fileformat for background images, save ~380KB
[~] Stripped out unnecessary code, save ~250KB

A special thanks to everyone who was involved with Daedalus on the PC in
the past. Sorry I was so rubbish at keeping the project ticking along. You
know who you are.*Updates:
-Testing among DCemu members has revealed a significant speed improvement.
-The screenshot feature seems to freeze the emulator in this version. Had to cobble together a screenshot using a digital camera.

Not to bring up the other emulator that was compiled by PSdonkey but is there any great signifigant improovements on this version of Daedlus, such as speed, improovements, I already realize that there are memory card improovements though :)

I must be top ten.

Big thanks. hopefully there will be a r6 and then a lucky r7 to complete the whole evolution of pc to psp daedalus.

Great work and congrats to all involved and much respect goes out to all those influencing.

YourStillWithMe
June 15th, 2006, 02:51
fantastic release, truly great work questions-how long will it be before sound can be thrown onto the programing?
What is the AVG speed of an n64 (framerate) game and how long would you roughly say it could take to get a fair speed going?
Do you see Perfect Dark or perhaps Goldeneye being playable? (PD=Best FPS EVER. Literally, I think the new console and PC FPS's are repititive and stupid.)

Shadowblind
June 15th, 2006, 03:05
you know what luck is?

My case) Shadowblind Luck is when you wait a really long time for something, and then that day the cable cord that connects something to something else to download that something you've been waiting for onto something gets lost.

If you didn't follow, in short I was waiting eagerly for the release of this and lost my PSP connector cable. &%$* my shadowblind luck. @#$% it all...

 If I would have tooken a broke from working on my new flash movie, I would not seen that R5 is out!! I tried Super Mario 64, but it ran at about 6fps. Then I tried it again, and noticed that the dyna rec was off. I turned it on, and now I'm play SM64 at 8-10 fps :D :D :D :D :D :D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Seems as if Paper Mario doesn't work. One time it froze at the title screen, the next it made it to the file select, so I'm gona play with it a little more. Nice work StrmnNrmn!!! This is one of my favorite emus!!!!!

LOL I knew someone would notice the change. I'm working on a new flash movie based on Zombies Ate My Neighbors for the SNES, and I thought since I was aready playing around with the sprites, I would make a new sig and avy. But, after this movie is done, it will be back to my good old Paper Mario avy and my awesome sig that PSPdemon made for me :)

I just tried Paper Mario without the dyna rec turned off, and I got to where you enter your name for your save file, and (just like with R4) it freezes when you hit end. I didn't get that error that use to pop up before it would freeze, so thats a plus :)

I am noticing a number of games are in game around 20-30fps yet you cant see the game itself. The psp screen is flickering to much, or the video is just not there, either way the games that do this for me are...

Bomberman 64, and Star Soldier.

Bomberman is a flickering black screen, in adventure mode you get 8fps in game.

I believe that star soldier would be playable if there was display output. As it was running 27fps in game.

As for some other roms, Aero gauge works in game at 8fps for awhile and then freezes.

And gaunlet legends dosent load. (16mb rom)

Sometimes the game will start other times it will freeze and the psp will shut down. For the games i listed that flickered, if you notice when you press select you can somtimes see the game screen but it dissapears in less then a seconde.

Hopefully this will continue with Daedalus and Monkey64 soon we will have good enough emu's to start playin games with a good speed, good sound, cool features. Thats what we are all pushing towards that and beyond. I'm sure now that this is a possibility. Everyone doubted at first saying it was impossible to come as far as we all ready have gotten and we should continue to prove them wroung and support PSmonkey and StermNermn(God i still can't spell his name right LOL). LOL Thats my speach. Well anyways has anyone looked at the interview with PSmonkey? The roms he is intrested in getting to work are some of my favorite and most popular games for the N64. So even if it does not emulate them all his priorites are Smash bros.,Goldeneye,Mario64, and many others.

LOL even though I'm not using this emulator I've been following its progress with interest.

One of the things that has made me think is how can we help StrmnNrmn out?

Well one of those ways is answered in his Blog.

"I'm not too sure what I want to concentrate on next. It's been over a month since the last release and I think that it would be a good idea to knock out the next few releases in quick succession, to help me pick up some momentum that I've lost. If I aim to do this I'll probably concentrate on some nice (but quick) improvements such as various graphical fixes, savegame support and per-rom control configuration. Any suggestions welcome :)"

So its over to you the users, what would you prefer StrmnNrmn worked on? A better User Interface? Bug fixes/graphical improvements? Frameskip? Or would you prefer he tries to look at finishing off the Dynarec work for more speed improvements (bearing in mind how long it has taken him to date).

ShadowProphet/Kaiser/Wraggy, this might make a good forum poll thread if you could create one.

A second point that I would like to make is that for those of you that are desperate for sound support this does open the kernal access "can of worms" that we seem to have avoided to date. Yes basic sound support could be implemented without the use of the Media Engine but this is likely to have an impact on the performance of the emulator. If the Media Engine is used to help out then this will limit the emulator to the 1.5 firmware users thus dividing the community. My personal feeling is that people should understand that this will be an issue at some point but that for the moment StrmnNrmn should concentrate more on the visual and performance elements of the Emulator than to start work on sound emulation.

Divide! Divide! 1.5 fw users make the sacrifice of not upgrading for preciously this reason!

Besides, 2.xx users now have the option of getting a modchip if they seriously want to use 1.5

Don't let this project turn into another fiasco like the GBA emus, which are useless without sound.

Most people who download should remember that this has been created using Mario 64 as a template (So I think) meaning that this game will be the first and the best to work.

Games such as Pokemon, Resident Evil and Mortal Kombat will NOT work as good as Mario 64 straight away. They will soon but like most good projects like this only time can tell.

Another addition I must say is that fact that most roms are MASSIVE for example Resident Evil 2 is 60+MB so it maybe too much for the PSP to handle.

thats why you can zip them. but it will take time.
and also, yes, games has more graphic detail than mario, such as zelda for example. yet again there is still more coding to go, and this is not the end for this emu, still sound must be made, speed also which is more important of them all.
Little by little there will be a huge improvements.
and hope it will be finished to at least full speed, unlike the PS emu, that died, so yeah.

Re2
Graphics
Angel Studios "port" of RE2 to Nintendo 64 sets itself apart from other versions primarily in the visual department. The game, which nobody thought was possible for the console, has arrived with a 4MB Expansion Pak ready high-resolution mode and all the FMV cut-scenes of the PlayStation original. How is this possible? A combination of smart compression techniques and a whopping 512 megabit (64MB) cartridge -- the biggest ever for a Nintendo 64 game.

When I play mario 64 I can play for maximum 5 minutes before I get game freeze, I got e-loader on gta exploit ,R5 and Firmware 2.60. Anyone else having this problem? And is there a way to fix it or do I have to wait until daedulus R6 and hope it's fixed then?

Yeah I'm fairly sure Strmnnrmn is going to address this in the upcoming r6 release.

"I'm also going to look at reducing memory requirements - I think the stability problems associated with running the emulator with dynarec for an extended period of time are a result of running out of memory."

Eloader on 2.60 isnt as stable as the 2.5 version either apparently.

Well I solved the problem myself, just turn Dynamic recompiltation off and get a framerate of 5 per sec. then the problem is gone , but then u get low framerate so noone would do that :(

I have a question: how does Gex work? It runs really fast, but when I jump on a level button thing, Gex just sits there and looks around. The emulator isn't frozen, because Gex is still moving, but he just sits there! Can someone help me?
I tried gex 2day and it worked really well! Everyone that r looking for a game that is playable Gex is the game for u! But then when going to a world gex just stands on that platform thing and wont do anything, but when i tried second time it loaded the lvl and i could walk around in a ghost mansion! So i think if u just tries this many times it will work, or at least it did for me:) Remember 2 save once u enter a lvl then u can just load and wont have 2 do all that lvl shit again (unfortunately i forgot:() I think this game works maybe better than mario 64:)

Psychic Powers

If you're talking about the actually Daedalus release zip you need to extract (unzip) the folders and files contained in it to the PSP/Game folder on your memory stick. (Correct me if I'm wrong guys).

stop begging for kernal access, it will offer no improvments other than more memory, but it all runs fine as is.
until we get sound support and the sound can be moved to the M.E. to free up the main processor

until then no difference

kernal access does not make everything faster like magic

(i think...)

those are opened via winrar. once you do that it will spit out a file which you put into the rom folder in the non% daedalus folder on your ms.

super mario 64 at 5.85 fps (R5)
super mario 64 at 3.15 fps (R4)

it may only a 2-3 fps increase, but the gameplay are so much smooth now.

Thats true bot the only thing is that this new version dont let us play to many roms specially the very first version give us the chanse to play it but the one for today dont well i dont now????????? ..........
