I thought i would have some fun, and upgrage my parents computer. It's a P2 233mhz, and I was given a celeron 266 chip. would it be better to keep the P2 in or put the celeron in. the celeron has a 33mhz gain over the P2, but it doesn't have an L2 cache. The P2 has an L2 cache what is the bigger advantage an L2 cache or a 33mhz boost.

No i don't want to buy a new processor, or a new coputer. So don't suggest it.

o_o That's.. slow.

I can't really answer that question off hand, but honestly, for a 33mhz boost, I wouldn't say it's worth the time to bother putting it in. As a general rule of thumb, a Pentium series chip is going to be better than a Celeron, even if it's a slightly higher speed. Personally, I wouldn't bother with it, but it's your call. ^^

Not really an upgrade in my opinion.

I've decided to stick with the P2 out of gut feeling. I also upgraded the ram, and added an old cd burner (I got alot of free computers stuff, because my school is moving.)

The celeron must have an L2 cache, I didn't think CPU's couldnt have an L2 cache.

Anyway, the P2 will have more cache than the celeron, so the P2 would out perform the celeron.

You can buy a 700Mhz P3 for peanuts off eBay.

I think first celerons didn't have L2 cache, or something like that, there was a huge difference between celeron and celeron "A", don't remember which of the 2 had cache.

Ya a computer doesnt need L2 cache.. I once saw a old AMD K-6 II that was left out in the snow, decided to pull it out and try it, lol... To my suprise it worked great except the L2 cache didnt work, it ran windows 98 fine. There is a beep code for all bios that the L2 cache isnt working, it is a non-fatal error...
