Ryan, who works for JUDD Studio Engineering, said of the installation:

"For years my wife has been on at me to put a computer into the kitchen where she can manage her recipes, shopping lists, to do lists and access the internet for looking up various things. After looking at a couple of pretty basic and well overpriced commercial units we decied to have a crack at doing this ourselves"
Using a touchscreen monitor, the internals are hidden away in a cabinet out of sight, and consist of an Intel Core i5 650 3.20GHz processor, 2GB DDR3 RAM, 800GB 32MB SATA II Western Digital hard drive all crammed into a Coolermaster Elite 333 Mid Tower Case. It actually runs on Windows XP using Active Desktop for the interface.
It plays music via iTunes, is Skype compatible, has her Outlook email and calendar, a Twitter feed, to-do list, Google, photos and even a barcode scanner so she can log which food items she needs to buy more of. She watches TV on it as it's connected to their lounge room TV, and if she gets lost between the fridge and microwave there's also Google Maps for help.
Ryan estimates the total cost at $1980 NZD, or X, but the work isn't finished just yet. He wants to upgrade XP to Windows 7 and build a new interface for it, along with installing Home Automation software, a webcam from the garden, and connect speakers, which he admits was a bit of an oversight.
